Gears 5 is looking to be the fresh start for the Gears of War franchise. There are a ton of new changes coming to the Xbox title, including a new game mode and the overall combat. Luckily, it won’t stop there as the Head of Coalition Rod Fergusson recently discussed the scope of the game’s campaign.
During a panel at PAX West, Fergusson touched on the new vehicle you’ll use to trek across these enormous levels:
“What players will see in Act 2 and Act 3 of the campaign is that you’ll be able to use the Skiff to traverse the largest levels we’ve ever built,”
The developer continued:
“You know, in some cases, the levels are 50-times bigger than any previous Gears level.”
It appears that Gears 5 is set to be the true reboot of the classic Xbox series. This is unlike Gears of War 4, which many fans slammed for playing it too safe. Along with massive levels, there will be “player-initiated combat”. This means that enemies won’t attack you unless they actually see you, which gives players a change of pace with a few stealth elements. Horde mode is receiving a major upgrade with “Power Taps”, a new strategic wrinkle into the standard Horde formula, and the inclusion of special abilities for all playable characters.
Then there is the new Escape game mode, where you play as one of three characters as you attempt to plant a venom bomb in Hives throughout Sera and proceed to make a swift escape from the Hive before the gas reaches you.
