Even a few years later, the last season of HBO’s Game of Thrones is still a controversial topic for most fans. However, the author of the books, George RR Martin, wants to put readers at ease. In a recent interview, Martin promised that the ending of the books will differ from Game of Thrones’ final season.
In an interview with PBS, George RR Martin expressed regrets over not finishing the books before beginning the television series:
My biggest issue there was when they began the [TV] series, I had four books already in print and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in 2011. I had a five-book head-start, and these are gigantic books, as you know; I never thought they would catch up with me, but they did. They caught up with me and passed me.
George RR Martin went on to say that his writing and the television series started branching off in two different directions once they ran out of printed material. He said, “So, I’m still working on the book, but you’ll see my ending when that comes out.”
As of this writing, George RR Martin has not announced a release date for the sixth book, Winds of Winter, but he gives constant updates on his blog. The final book, Dreams of Spring, hasn’t been started yet, as far as fans know. So, we still have some time before seeing Martin’s vision for the real ending.
In the meantime, HBO’s new show, House of the Dragon, is set to release in 2022. The first five books in the A Song of Fire and Ice series, A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance of Dragons, are available now.
