Georgia State Rep. Kasey Carpenter is responding to a resurfaced photo that some users have described as blackface from a costume party more than a decade ago, but online reactions suggest many are not accepting that explanation.

The image was shared on Reddit and later reported on by local media outlets, drawing attention across social platforms. The image shows Carpenter in dark makeup as part of a costume he said was intended to portray Kanye West. Addressing the controversy, the Dalton lawmaker acknowledged the photo and called it a mistake, saying he understands why people are offended and would not make the same decision today.

The renewed attention has shifted focus to when the photo was taken, with some users questioning that explanation.

What People Online Are Saying

One user pushed back directly on that defense, writing that “by 2013 there was already widespread understanding that this was wrong.” Another echoed that sentiment, adding, “for the younger Redditers, I promise you we knew blackface was bad 14 years ago.”

Others were more blunt about the political reality. One commenter wrote that “the people who vote for this guy won’t care,” while another claimed some supporters would back him “because he did it.” A separate response described the act as “making a joke out of a minority,” arguing that kind of behavior remains acceptable to parts of the electorate.

Not all reactions were one-sided. One commenter, who said they had previously interviewed Carpenter, called the situation “deeply frustrating,” noting his work on bipartisan issues while still describing blackface as a “bright line” that has long been unacceptable. They added they were “really angry” but hesitant to define someone solely by what they described as their worst mistake.

The debate has also touched on local political stakes, as Carpenter faces a primary challenger, raising questions about whether the controversy will have any measurable impact. The situation is gaining attention as it raises questions about past conduct, public accountability, and how voters respond to controversies involving elected officials.

Many of the reactions focus on the timeline, with some users arguing that the explanation does not align with what people understood at the time.

The discussion continues online as reactions to the resurfaced image remain divided.
