A Georgia woman is facing backlash online after sharing a TikTok video about buying sushi for her son’s birthday. She explained that her son wanted sushi for dinner but did not want to go with her to pick it up. She decided to charge him gas money for the trip, then used some of that money to buy herself a snack, sparking a wave of criticism after the video went viral.

The woman shared the video on her TikTok account, @tryingmyfkinbest, where she documented the food she bought and explained how much she spent. The video quickly gained attention, reaching one million views as viewers began criticizing her decision rather than focusing on the sushi. Much of the discussion centered on why she charged her son for the trip and what she described as a consequence for him not going along.

In the video, the Georgia woman explained that she had expected the trip to be a chance for her and her son to spend time together. When he instead asked her to pick up the sushi, she told him he would need to give her gas money. She then used some of that money to buy herself a snack before showing the items she picked up at Kroger.

Among the food was a New York Crunch Roll made with imitation crab, cucumber, avocado, fried onions, spicy mayo, and sushi sauce. She also showed an onigiri filled with crab salad, along with eel sauce and spicy mayo. She said the total came to $17.72, with $15 of the purchase coming from the money her son gave her for gas.

The video drew strong criticism, with many commenters questioning why a child needed to pay his mother after choosing not to accompany her to the store. Some argued that declining to go on the trip did not warrant the charge, while others focused on her decision to use part of the money for herself. One commenter wrote, “Being your child’s first scammer is wild.”

The boy’s age also became a major point of discussion. Many viewers initially appeared to assume he was an older teenager, while others pointed out that he was around 9 or 10. That led commenters to question the situation further, particularly why he apparently preferred giving his mother gas money rather than going with her.

Other viewers questioned the $15 gas charge and mocked the Kroger sushi, while some turned their attention to the Georgia woman’s nails. Several commenters also claimed that follow-up videos showed her continuing to defend the decision as a lesson about money, while others suspected the controversy could be rage bait.

For a birthday dinner that started with a request for sushi, the internet ended up serving the woman a much bigger side dish: a million views and a mountain of criticism.
