Goldie Hawn Speaks On America’s Culture
The 77-year-old acting star spoke candidly to Variety about her recent dissatisfaction with award presentations, particularly the Oscars. “It used to be elegant,” Goldie said of the annual Academy Awards ceremony.
Goldie Hawn said she was not just being old-fashioned before adding that she misses “reverence.” She revealed that things are now politicized; however, she desires to see people in awe again.
She referred to Will Smith’s Oscar slap after revealing that she would want to see people laughing genuinely. But not at the expense of other people.
During the Oscars last year, Will Smith reportedly slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head.
Goldie Hawn Says Will Smith’s Oscar Slap Is Indicative
When she saw Will Smith hit Oscars presenter Chris Rock in 2022, Goldie admitted she was outraged. The live broadcast event struck her as a metaphor for many current global concerns.
“It’s indicative of our culture right now,” Goldie said.
While she said others might see it as a situation where an individual lost control, she saw it as “a microcosm oftentimes of our world.”
But Goldie was surprised by the composure Chris displayed when Will hit him. As Will returned to his seat, the comedian joked about the bizarre situation. “Chris was brilliant — totally held on to and controlled his emotions, was able to stand with dignity,” Goldie commended.
She added that that is how she would love the world to look; however, she noted it was not that way.
Goldie’s points about American culture are valid. Hopefully, her desires on how she wishes things to come to pass.
