High school graduation is a pivotal moment in many people’s lives, marking the passage into young adulthood. Family and friends often appear to show their support, but for one graduating senior in Kansas City, Missouri, someone particularly special showed up to mark the occasion.

In a video shared to Reddit on r/MadeMeSmile by user New_Libran, Kansas City Christian School senior Dylan Mwaniki is seen being greeted by a surgeon who saved his life following a bout with an undisclosed form of cancer. The surgeon’s name wasn’t given in the video, but her impact on Mwaniki’s life is undeniable from the hug she and Mwaniki share in the short clip posted.

The heartwarming video was first posted by Kevin LeBranche on his personal Facebook profile, with the caption “When your surgeon who saved your life, surprises you at your high school graduation!” The post has gained considerable traffic since LeBranche posted it on May 17, garnering 1.7 million views and over 2,200 shares.

Subsequent posts on LeBranche’s profile showed Mwaniki and his graduating classmates both during and after the ceremony. Another video showed Mwaniki walking across the stage and receiving his diploma, while a collection of photos showed students posing with Mwaniki and others, diplomas in hand, with their families, friends, and faculty.

Reddit Users Respond to the Reunion Between Doctor and Former Patient

Users on Facebook weren’t the only ones to offer their thoughts and warm responses to LeBranche’s video. The video was upvoted 15,000 times, making it one of the subreddit’s top videos the day it was posted, and many users took to the comment section to respond.

“Imagine the profound feeling of seeing a child you saved outlive their diagnosis and finally cross that graduation stage,” wrote one user, who wrote the thread’s top comment.

“She’s going to remember that hug during those times when things get rough,” wrote another user. “That hug communicated things words never could.”

Other users offered simpler responses like “Now that’s a memory he’ll hold on to for a while,” “Not me tearing up at work,” and “jokes on you, I already planned to cry today!“
