A new community-led Half-Life 2 remaster, complete with ray tracing, is on the way and will allow players to experience Gordon Freeman’s horrific journey like never before. A first look at the game was unveiled by NVIDIA and showcased the staggering improvement in graphics to give Valve’s iconic shooter a new lease of life.

Half-Life 2 Remaster with Ray Tracing

The Half-Life 2 remaster is officially titled Half-Life 2: An RTX Remix Project. It is being developed by some of the game’s best mod teams which have come together to form Orbifold Studios. The impressive graphics shown in the trailer are a result of the NVIDIA RTX Remix Platform. Modders can take advantage of this for free to apply RTXON mods to classic games for enhanced materials and full ray tracing. It essentially makes older games on par graphically with the most recent titles on current platforms.

While there’s no gameplay in the announcement trailer, we see the results of ray tracing in Half-Life 2 remaster firsthand. One of the most noticeable differences is the enhancements to the materials on Gordon Freeman’s suit. With RTX applied, the suit’s fabric materials, as well as the plastic and metal components, are given much more emphasis. Light sources can now cast realistic shadows and dark areas are illuminated. The game’s enemies have also undergone a makeover to fit in with their new surroundings. You can view a full list of improvements published by NVIDIA that will be made in the remaster.

Last year, Portal with RTX was released to significant acclaim, with many praising the astonishing graphical improvements that were achieved with RTX. If the positive reaction to that game is anything to go by, then fans of Half-Life 2 are surely in for a treat.

There’s no release date for the Half-Life 2 remaster and it’s noted that it is early in development. Orbifold Studios are actively recruiting experienced modders to aid them in development.
