It is often that Zelda games receive direct sequels, but that’s absolutely the case with Breath of the Wild. Nintendo’s latest game picks up almost directly after, and though there are new floating islands and subterranean dungeons to explore it more or less takes place in the same sandbox. Hyrule is the same Hyrule you remember from before, including its many points of interest. But what about Breath of the Wild’s most celebrated mini-dungeons? How many shrines are in Tears of the Kingdom? Here’s what you need to know.

The total number of shrines found so far in Tears of the Kingdom is 152. This is actually many more than was in Breath of the Wild, which is perhaps not entirely surprising given the sheer scale of the new Hyrule map. Not only does it feature the same enormous sandbox as before but also Sky Islands and an underground segment too.

As it turns out, the same number of Shrines appear on Hyrule’s ground level as in Breath of the Wild — 120. These are now different in appearance and design, of course, but the total number is the same.

It’s the Sky Islands above that feature the additional 32 on top of that tally. These are likely to take you longer to find given that they’re harder to spot. You don’t have quite the same ability to scour out their whereabouts as on the ground.

So what about the Depths area of the open world? Well, it turns out this area doesn’t actually feature any Shrines at all. It’s instead reserved for dungeons and story segments, so don’t bother investigating if you’re wanting to complete all 152 Shrines.

What are Shrines? Explained

In case you’re still getting to grips with everything Tears of the Kingdom then you won’t necessarily be up to speed with Shrines. Well, you’ll soon get used to them! As we’ve mentioned above, these mini-dungeons are scattered plentifully across Hyrule and above, and you’ll be completing at least the vast majority throughout your adventure. That’s because they all contain valuable rewards, like precious items and weapons.

Most importantly, though, beating a Shrine rewards you with Lights of Blessing. These can be exchanged for either more Health or Stamina for Link. You can also fast travel to Shrines once they’ve been discovered, which makes navigating Hyrule’s enormous expanse all the easier.

You can check out a walkthrough of a Shrine below from WoW quests to get an idea of what they look like. Otherwise, we have quest walkthroughs for many of them, including the Kahatanaum Shrine.

Tears of the Kingdom is available on Nintendo Switch.
