How to Defeat Odin in God of War: Ragnarok?
First, congratulations are in order since this is the final boss. You will encounter Odin during the game’s seventeenth chapter, entitled “Realms at War”. After he has done numerous atrocities, including killing his son Thor, it is Odin’s time to suffer, and you are the one who will defeat Odin.
You must know that he is well-prepared for you since he has been spying on you since you set foot on the first Norse mythology realm.
Divided into four phases, Odin’s fight is tough, but the goal of beating Odin in God of War Ragnarok can be achieved by following a few strategies and tips.
Defeat Odin in God of War: Ragnarok – Phase One
In the first phase of the fight, Odin will relentlessly use its spear to lunge at you. Luckily, these attacks are rather slow, so you will have plenty of time to parry them. Once you parry the incoming attack, Odin will be vulnerable to anything you can throw at him.
Next in line with his myriad of attacks is Bifrost Charge. Odin will charge towards you with his spear glowing blue. Try to dodge sideways to avoid massive damage and then attack him with light and heavy runic attacks using your blades of chaos and leviathan axe.
Frost Beam and Bifrost Slam will await you next. Odin will rise into the air with its spear glowing blue and lower the beam. Yelling the words Issprengja, Odin will attack you with a deadly frost beam. Dodge sideways in between the attacks. Now, he will raise the spear into the air and slam it into the ground yelling the words Glettings Bara.
The third elemental attack is Bifrost Spell; this time, you will hear Odin proclaim Leiptra while unleashing the Bifrost spell. Try to parry the attack, which will return it to Odin and cause major damage to the Norse god. At this point, you will want to use the Rond of Purification.
Once you have depleted three bars of Odin’s health, he will strike you with an unavoidable hit. In a way, this will reset the fight and announce the second phase of the final boss fight.
Phase Two
Odin will start the second phase with the fast charging attack toward you. Move sideways as soon as you see Odin rising into the air. Once he is done with the attack, Odin will have a short pause where he will be prone to your heavy melee attacks.
He will then slam his spear into the ground, and the ground around you will turn into Bifrost. Jump to a different platform as soon as possible, as you don’t want to be caught up in all that purple glow. It will delete a large portion of your health.
As Odin repeats his attacks mercilessly, try to play your game and deal as much damage as you can by parrying his attacks and making your moves in split seconds when he is open.
You will reach the checkpoint and be tasked to press R3 and finish the battle against Odin. However, a cutscene will start with Odin outsmarting Kratos and Atreus and binding the father-son duo to the ground.
Nevertheless, Freya will interfere, canceling Odin’s attack using her Vanir magic. Now, the battle will start again, only this time, you will have Atreus and Freya on your side, but Odin will be even stronger.
Phase Three
In this phase, Odin will first come at you with Raven Orb Attack. He will create a giant red orb above his head and then unleash a giant flock of Ravens toward you. Throw the axe at the orb before he unleashes the ravens to avoid any damage.
Next, he will whip the area in front of him with the Spectral whip. Move sideways when he starts doing this, as each whip will create an unblockable shockwave of frost.
Now you will deal with five red orbs. You can do this alone, so make Freya and Atreus shoot the rest as you strike all you can with your axe.
Odin will then create a Bifrost Quake with his Spectral Whip as he hits the ground in several directions. Dodge sideways to avoid the quakes. Before the next phase, Odin will have his whip twirling a large red ring around him. Before he charges the attack, you can Shield Strike him to interrupt the attack.
Phase Four
Before phase four starts, Odin will be a victim of another of your devastating blows once you press R3. However, he still won’t go down. This time, he will rise with two health bars, blue and orange.
This is a tricky one. Blades of Chaos can damage the blue bar, while the orange health bar is for damage you cause by your Leviathan Axe.
Additionally to protected health, Odin will add many new attacks to his already mighty arsenal.
Odin will unleash a Flame Beam at you, so make sure to block it with your shield to avoid any damage.
Next, elemental circles will start forming on the ground, filled with frost, poison, or fire. If you find yourself in any of these circles, you will suffer passive damage over time.
If you come near Odin and stand too close to him for too long, he will create exploding shields of Bifrost, Frost, or Fire.
As the battle rages on and you manage to take out enough health once more, the press R3 button will prompt. Follow the QTE prompts to take Odin down.
In the cutscene that follows, you will see Atreus defeating Odin taking his soul, and placing it in one of Angrboda’s marbles. Congratulations, you defeated Odin in God of War: Ragnarok. All you need to do now is follow the final cutscene to reach the storyline conclusion.
