Harry Potter is a story of growth and improvement, and Hogwarts Legacy follows that same trajectory. The young witch or wizard you played at the beginning of the game has grown a great deal and learned many things since then, becoming a formidable force in the Wizarding World. That’s fortunate because your boss encounter against Ranrok Dragon won’t be easy. Ranrok Dragon is a powerful antagonist, and though his moves are simple, it only takes a few mistakes for you to die. Prepare yourself with your strongest spells and get ready for a fight. Here’s how to beat Ranrok Dragon in Hogwarts Legacy and become the hero you were always meant to be.

How to Beat Ranrok Dragon in Hogwarts Legacy

To beat Ranrok Dragon and emerge victorious in Hogwarts Legacy you’ll need to survive a lengthy three-phase boss fight. The good news is Ranrok’s attacks don’t change much between stages, so once you’ve learned how to counter each of them, your strategy will come together without much effort. That’s fortunate because Ranrok is harder than most other boss fights in the game. A variety of spells work well here, but we recommend the following reliable choices:

  • Diffindo – A powerful ranged slashing attack
  • Confringo – A long-range attack that sets enemies on fire
  • Glacius – A spell that freezes enemies, increasing the damage they take
  • Depulso – A spell that repels objects and enemies

Prepare for Each Phase

Each phase of the boss fight takes place in a different part of the arena, and you’ll have to pursue to dragon from one place to the next as you wear down his health. Take the opportunity to top off your health if you suffered any damage during the previous phase, and you might not have a good opportunity once the next part of the battle begins.

Dodge or Block Ranrok Dragon’s Projectiles

Ranrok Dragon’s most common attacks are also his simplest. During the first, the dragon hurls a ball of energy at you, which deals damage upon impact. It has a relatively small hitbox and is slow enough that you can reliably dodge or block it. Dodging and blocking are both fine, just make sure that you pay attention to the dragon while protecting yourself so that you don’t accidentally set yourself up to get hit by a follow-up attack. During the second, the dragon launches a projectile of dark energy that you can dodge or redirect back at him with Ancient Magic Throw.

Avoid the Dragon’s Beam

Ranrok Dragon’s second attack is a powerful red energy beam. It sweeps horizontally and scorches the ground beneath it. Because of his sweeping pattern and relatively fast start-up speed, this attack is harder to dodge than the energy ball attack. Keep an eye out for the animation that foreshadows it and get ready to dodge. If the beam does strike you, heal immediately so that you can continue the fight.

Target the Orbs

The only way to beat Ranrok Dragon in Hogwarts Legacy is to target the floating energy orbs that appear throughout the boss battle. They’re large, glow, and always appear near the dragon, so they’re impossible to miss. The dragon will be invulnerable until they are destroyed, so always prioritize eliminating them. Each orb can only be destroyed by magic of the same type. If you’re using the spells recommended above, here’s how your spells and the orbs match up:

  • Purple (Force): Depulso.
  • Yellow (Control): Glacius.
  • Red (Damage): Diffindo, Confringo.

Avoid the AoE Bubble

During the second stage of the fight, Ranrok Dragon gains a powerful AoE attack. It unleashes a large red explosion that radiates out from him in all directions. You’ll either need to run away or time your dodge through it carefully. The boss telegraphs it, and the explosion moves relatively slowly, so you’ll have plenty of time to see it coming and make sure you don’t get hit.

Dodge Ranrok Dragon’s Charge

The main difference between the third phase and the previous two is that the dragon lands on the ground for the third phase. In addition to his other attacks, he will now charge forward to snap at you with his mighty jaws. It’s relatively easy to sidestep, fortunately. The arena in which you face him for phase three is small, so you’ll need to keep your whereabouts in mind when dodging the boss’s attacks. Destroy the floating orbs as quickly as possible to beat Ranrok Dragon at last, proceeding victorious to the end of Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
