Just because it has the ‘Avatar’ in its name, doesn’t mean it’s a pushover like most Avatar enemies in Elden Ring. The Scadutree Avatar in the Elden Ring is one of the most blindsiding boss fights in the DLC. It comes complete with a lore implication and passive storytelling that you might miss in the heat of battle. Hence, I’ve prepared a guide on how to beat the Scadutree Avatar in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. This ought to help you appreciate the lore better once you’re done raging.
Scadutree Avatar Location
Getting to the Scadutree Avatar is tough and you need to pass through several gate-keeping barriers before you can fight this boss. Below is a summary of the steps needed to find the Scadutree Avatar:
- Defeat the Rellana to get access to Scadu Altus.
- In Scadu Altus, go to Moorth Ruins in the east.
- Look for an entrance underground on the eastern edge of Moorth Ruins. This underground passage will lead to Bonny Village below Moorth Ruins.
- From Bonny Village, cross the two rope bridges to the east, follow the road north, and then turn northwest at the fork.
- This should lead you to Shadow Keep, Chruch District. It’s flooded.
- Explore the area and look for a gate lever that will drain the water.
- Once the water is drained, look for an elevator in one of the churches in the north of the Chruch District.
- This elevator (it’s a long ride) should lead you to the Scadutree base and the Scadutree Avatar. It’s a huge boss arena, make sure to go to the center to trigger the fight.
All the switches and passages you need to get to the Scadutree Avatar are located in the Shadow Keep, Church District, including the gate lever to drain the flood. Do keep in mind that the Scadutree Avatar is an optional boss.
How to Beat the Scadutree Avatar
This fight has three phases, so we’ll divide the instructions accordingly. But before you dive in, I have some pointers to impart to you so you don’t get rolled by this giant sunflower. consider this as preparation for the Scadutree Avatar boss fight (it took me two attempts with these preparation tips).
- Make sure your Scadutree Blessing is at 10+.
- Max out your weapon or your Spirit Ashes (if you want to use one).
- Bring fire damage sources.
- Bring a Greatshield if you can carry it. It’s safer to block than to roll.
- This boss doesn’t bleed.
- You can’t bring Torrent.
Scadutree Avatar, like all other Avatar enemies in Elden Ring, are plant monsters. Thus, you’d do well to bring fire to the fight. The Scadutree Avatar is notably weak to fire attacks. If you want to cheese this boss fight, use the following gear:
- Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear
- Any Greatshield.
- Greatshield Talisman
- Spear Talisman
- Shard of Alexander
A couple of uninterrupted Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear Weapon Skill casts are enough to end each phase of the Scadutree Avatar. You will need to time them well. You can also “turtle” behind a Greatshield and poke the Scadutree Avatar; just be mindful of your Stamina.
Again, the fight has three phases and they all begin after you bring the boss’ HP down to zero. The Scadutree Avatara will revive itself twice, each revival giving it more power and HP than the last.
Scadutree Avatar Phase 1
Arguably, this one is the easiest phase of the fight and where you should go all out. How well you perform here dictates how hard Phase 2 will be.
Stick to the base of the Scadutree Avatar and keep attacking it. Keep the lock-on to the base of the boss as well. You can chip away at the Scadutree Avatar this way. You might want to use a Greatshield with 100 percent Physical block to take care of the Scadutree’s body slams.
Once you reduce the Scadutree Avatar’s HP to zero, it will collapse and be open to a Critical Attack. Make sure to run to its head so you can perform this Critical Attack, otherwise, you will have a harder Phase 2.
Scadutree Avatar Phase 2
If you manage to stab the Scadutree Avatar with the Critical Attack by the end of Phase 1, it will revive and start Phase 2 with just 75 percent of its HP. This is a huge advantage for you. I recommend simply dying and restarting the fight if you didn’t land the Critical Attack. That 25 percent boss HP decrease is too valuable to neglect.
The Scadutree will be charging at you frequently. Luckily, if you have a Greatshield and lots of Stamina, you can just shrug off these Physical charges and block them. After that, it’s a matter of just chipping away at the base of the boss or cheesing it with Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear.
Once you get its HP to zero, it will revive once more for the final time.
Scadutree Avatar Phase 3
This is the final phase. Even if you have a Greatshield, I recommend watching out for a light explosion attack move from the Scadutree Avatar as this can be difficult to block. You might have to roll through it, run away, or just tank it with a full HP bar. Its chest glows yellow when it’s about to explode.
Again, just cheese the boss with Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear Weapon Skill or chip away at it by attacking its base or its head. If it’s not trying to perform its explosion attack, you can turtle behind your Greatshield and poke safely.
