Kratos Battling the Frost Phantom in God of War Ragnarok
This article is over 3 years old and may contain outdated information.

During “The Word of Fate” in God of War Ragnarok, Kratos and his followers will encounter a deadly spectral enemy known as the Frost Phantom. Like its cousin, the Flame Phantom, the Frost Phantom is a supernatural being with a body that can take on multiple forms to attack its prey. Additionally, the phantom’s body is invulnerable, but its core can be destroyed if players manage to find and demolish its three Runic Springs. These springs are obelisk-shaped structures that only emerge after the Frost Phantom has sustained a certain amount of damage. Once these mystical pillars have been destroyed, Kratos will be able to finish off the Frost Phantom.

Frost Phantom Boss Battle in God of War Ragnarok

Destroying Runic Springs to Defeat the Frost Phantom in God of War Ragnarok

The Frost Phantom in God of War Ragnarok does not have a particular attack pattern, making it tricky to predict its moveset. However, an ideal strategy to perform is doing as much ranged damage as possible and rushing the boss with melee attacks whenever it completes an offensive ability.

The Frost Phantom in God of War Ragnarok has several telegraphic AoE attacks that are easy to notice and dodge before they hit Kratos. On the other hand, its melee attacks are much more erratic and unpredictable. Furthermore, the reach of its close-quarters attack is much larger than expected. Therefore, only engage the phantom with a relentless melee combo when the timing is opportune. Blindly spamming melee moves will quickly result in Kratos’s demise. Players must watch for visual indicators that the beast will strike, such as the expanding rings that emit from its body before an attack.

As mentioned above, defeating the Frost Phantom in God of War Ragnarok requires players to deal enough damage to the boss that it temporarily flees. While the phantom is dormant, three Runic Springs will appear around the vicinity.

  • One will be atop a small spire.
  • Another is on the lower ground in front of the arena’s central rock formation.
  • The third is somewhat hidden atop the rocky outcropping of the same rock formation.

These Runic Springs glow with a bright purple light, making them hard to miss. Nevertheless, players must destroy them as quickly as possible before the Frost Phantom returns. Once all three springs have been demolished, Kratos can execute a finisher attack on the phantom to defeat the boss.
