Coop is the Farm building you need to raise Chickens, Ducks, Rabbits, and even Dinosaurs. At first, you will only be able to raise Chickens, but eventually, you can raise more and unlock new livestock. Not to mention that a Coop is cheaper than a Barn, so it’s an excellent way to start making money and developing your Farm. If you have any questions about where to build and upgrade your Coop, our Stardew Valley guide will help you out.
Stardew Valley: How To Build and Upgrade Coop
[Updated on August 27 – Added new details and images]
Building a Coop is not difficult; go to Robin’s Carpenter’s Shop in the Mountain area north of Pelican Town. Head inside from 9 AM to 5 PM, speak with Robin, and select the “Construct Farm Building” option. You can build and upgrade various farm buildings there.
To build a Coop, you need:
- Wood x300.
- Stone x100.
- 4,000 Gold.
After that, you can place the Coop on your Farm and wait for 3 in-game days for it to be constructed. During this time, Robin will be busy building it at your Farm and cannot be disturbed. Your first Coop is only 6×3 in size and is only able to store four Chickens.
Upgrading to Big Coop
After you advance a little bit more in the game, you will probably want to upgrade your Coop to the next level. Any of your standard Coop can be upgraded to Big Coop at Robin’s shop with:
- Wood x400.
- Stone x150.
- 10,000 Gold.
It will take 2 days to upgrade the building, allowing you to grow 8 animals and use the Incubator. In addition to normal chickens, you can also raise Golden Chickens, Void Chickens, Ducks, and Dinosaurs.
Upgrading to Deluxe Coop
Once you have a Big Coop, you can upgrade it to a Deluxe Coop by spending another 2 days and these items:
- Wood x500.
- Stone x200.
- 20,000 Gold.
In the best version of the Coop, you will have 12 spots for animals and unlock the Rabbit. Also, this coop will have an Auto Feed System; as long as there’s Hay in your Silo, the Feeding Bench will be automatically restocked. If you let your livestock graze outside though, the Hay won’t be consumed.
All Coop Animals List and The Most Profitable Produce
Initially, you can only keep four Chickens, but when you upgrade the Coop in Stardew Valley, the number of livestock will grow. You can find a list of them below:
- Chicken: Chickens become adults after 3 nights and will lay eggs for you every day. To get a chicken, you have to pay 800 Gold or place an egg in the incubator for 9,000 minutes.
- Duck: Ducks become adults in 5 days and can produce an egg or feather worth 250 gold every two days. You must spend 1,200 Gold to buy a duck at Marnie’s Ranch.
- Rabbit: The Rabbit grows up in 6 nights and produces wool every 4 days. You can only get a Rabbit by buying it for 8,000 Gold.
- Void Chicken: Void Chicken matures in the incubator as fast as a regular Chicken. The Witch can leave the void egg in Big or Deluxe Coops. It can also be bought from Krobus for 5,000 Gold or received as a gift from Shane.
- Golden Chicken: The Golden Chicken grows and matures in an incubator like other chickens. But its eggs can be sold for at least 500 Gold, and you will have to spend as much as 100,000 Gold to buy a golden egg.
- Dinosaur: When a Dinosaur is born, it is already mature. It will produce eggs every 7 days, and if you want to raise a Dinosaur from it, it will take 18,000 minutes. You can get a dinosaur egg by fishing a treasure chest, digging up an Artifact Spot, or winning the Crane Game.
Building and upgrading Coop can be a good source of Gold in Stardew Valley. When you level up, take the Tiller and Artisan skills to increase all Artisan Goods you sell by 40% more. Afterward, simply make Mayonnaise from Max Friendship Chicken eggs every day, which should be sold at 399 Gold. Sure, other livestock can produce more expensive items– but they take much more time to appear too.
