Among all the supernatural fiends you’ll find in Once Human, there are a few Deviants you can equip and use. Initially, you might think these strange critters only exist to use up space in your high-tech backpack or Cradle, but there’s much more to them. These little guys can help you in combat, thus getting you out of some hairy situations. So, if you want some extra firepower and a kind of pet to follow you around in this Stardust-riddled world, Deviants are your choice.

During Once Human‘s tutorial, you’ll obtain your first Deviant and learn how to equip and use them. However, if you need a refresher, here’s the gist of it:

  • To equip a Deviant, head to an Independent Secure Unit and interact with it.
  • Deposit one of your Deviants in it.
  • Head to the menu on the right and press “Synchronize.”
  • Once you do that, you’ll be able to see your Deviant in your UI, which is activated by pressing E.

Using Deviants in Combat

With your new supernatural pal equipped, you can unleash their power against your foes. To do so, you must press E and you’ll see your character equip the Deviant, such as in the image below.

Furthermore, you can select any of the combat modes your Deviant has. Remember that these modes will vary depending on your currently equipped Deviant, so always hold E to bring the radial menu and choose your preferred attack mode.

By now, your Deviant must’ve guided you to victory in Once Human. While they are supernatural beings, that doesn’t mean you can use them infinitely. After attacking them, their energy and mood will lower. This will hinder their crafting, gathering, and combat capabilities, so you must prioritize returning them to top shape. To do this, you have to build an Independent Secure Unit and place the Deviant you’ve equipped in it; this way, your companion in Once Human will recover its mood and energy.
