So, you’ve decided you don’t want to brave the harsh world and monstrous creatures of Dark and Darker alone. Gratefully, you can go in with a party rather than solo it. But what happens when your trusty party members fall in battle? Well, you don’t panic because they aren’t out of it all just yet. In Dark and Darker, everyone has a Soul Heart. If you can get the Soul Heart of a fallen teammate, you have a chance to revive them so they can rejoin the adventure.

[Updated June 8, 2024 – provided step-by-step walkthrough on getting a Soul Heart and brief mention on another way to resurrect teammates]

Getting a Soul Heart in Dark and Darker is simple enough, but you’ll have to wait until your teammate is dead. From there, do the following:

  1. Interact with your fallen party member
  2. Remove their chest armor piece
  3. Locate the Soul Heart in the chest armor slot

Once you have it, you equip the Heart to your utility bar. You’re one step closer to reviving your fallen companion.

Using a Soul Heart

Now it’s time to return your party member to the living. But first, we need to track down an Altar of Sacrifice. This process is straightforward, and there are plenty of Altars to choose from. You can find several around the lower levels in dungeons. When you see one, interact with it and offer both the Soul Heart and a portion of your health. You need both for it to work, so be sure you’re in good shape.

As you carry your friend’s Soul Heart in Dark and Darker, remember that anything can happen. If you’re killed before using the Altar of Sacrifice, you’re both dead and it was all for nothing. If you manage to succeed with the resurrection, then prepare to protect your teammate because they’ll awaken with none of their loot.

Even though it’s straightforward, you must remain on your guard until the job is done. We all can’t be Clerics and use Resurrection on our fallen teammates.

Dark and Darker is available free on PC.
