This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

Even though your gnome has outstanding crafting skills from the very beginning of the game, not having the rare materials can slow down your progress in the game. Of course, you can get Iron or Elven Wood relatively quickly, but it will take you much longer to find Ironwood. Being an incredibly durable yet lightweight material, Ironwood is an essential upgrading material for your gear and tools in Return to Moria, but it’s not easy to find. You will have to go through a rather impressive part of the plot to get to The Lower Deeps, and we will help you with this.

First of all, it’s worth noting that you can get Ironwood in Return to Moria in two ways:

  • Firstly, cutting down giant mushrooms.
  • Secondly, breaking furniture in ancient fortresses.

If you want to collect Ironwood in large quantities, go to The Lower Deeps and look for high mushrooms whose trunks are more like a tree. Having reached the desired location, at first, you will only be able to find small mushrooms or those that are slightly taller than you. Chopping such plants guarantees Wood Scraps and some Ubasam Wood.

But if you go deeper, you will find giant mushroom trees, cutting which will reward you with Wood Scraps, some Ubasam Wood, and Ironwood. If you cannot cut down this mushroom, create a more powerful ax. Alternatively, you can inscribe an Emerald into it on the Rune Table.

If you prefer to explore ancient fortresses, you should explore the rooms on The Lower Deeps level. You can break tables, chairs, nightstands, and other furniture, and with some chance, you will get Ironwood. It is worth noting that the chance of success is not high, and furniture is quite rare, so take this method only as a pleasant bonus.

Once you collect some Ironwood, you get access to many helpful recipes. But we recommend creating an Ironwood Pickaxe first. This Tier 4 pickaxe has excellent durability and speed and will allow you to mine some of the rarest ores.

To summarize, here’s what you need to know about how to obtain and use Ironwood in Return to Moria:

  • Head to The Lower Deeps area.
  • Chop down tall mushroom trees or break furniture in ancient ruins.
  • Inscribe your ax with Emerald.
  • By accumulating some Ironwood, you can create much more powerful tools.
