As with other open-world or free-roaming games with huge maps, there are many ways to travel the lands of Terraria. One of them is by using Pylons, giant crystals that let you teleport between locations. However, getting them isn’t particularly easy, but don’t worry because this Terraria guide will help you find those Pylons.

How to Get Pylons in Terraria

Pylons (except the Universal Pylon) can actually be bought from the usual vendor NPCs other than the Traveling Merchant and the Skeleton Merchant — but you need to fulfill specific requirements first before they start stocking up on Pylons.

First, the vendor NPC must be happy enough that their items are discounted by 15% or more. This happens when you reach a sale modifier of 90% or higher. You can increase their Happiness Rating by:

  • Placing them in a biome they like.
  • Placing them within 25 tiles near another NPC they like.
  • Having no more than two other NPCs within 25 tiles.
  • Having no more than three other NPCs between 25 and 120 tiles.

According to Kuratheris S on Quora, the easiest way to reach that point (before even having to kill any bosses) is by putting the Arms Dealer near the Nurse without other NPCs nearby. The Arms Dealer will now sell all Pylons available except Snow. For the Snow Pylons, then you will need to put the Golfer and Angler near each other. Keep in mind that Pylons are sold based on the biome you’re in, not the biome the NPC is in.

Other than that, to make them start selling Pylons, there also must be another NPC near the vendor, and you are currently not in Corruption or Crimson biomes. Interestingly, a hybrid biome can result in multiple types of Pylons showing up in the NPC’s inventory. Watch YouTuber Salendrak’s video below for more details on how they work.

How to Use Pylons in Terraria

Nevertheless, NPC’s happiness only matters when you’re purchasing a Pylon. To use them, there are other requirements:

  1. Pylons can only be used if there are two or more living, housed NPCs inside a rectangle that is 169-tiles wide and 124-tiles high and is centered on each Pylon.
    • In this case, the Old Man and town pets still count as housed NPC.
  2. Pylons will still function even if the NPCs leave the area.
  3. Pylons cannot function if an NPC is not close to their house.
  4. Pylons can only be used in their respective biome.
  5. A single Pylon is useless, but you can create a Pylon Network by making two or more Pylons.
  6. Pylons can only be accessed through the map menu.
