For anyone who’s played FF14 and admired those charming Axolotl, you can finally enjoy one of your own once you unlock the Axolotl Mount in FFXIV. The mount is accessible after going through some challenging content. So, you may not enjoy riding on one in the immediate future. If you take some time, you’ll have what you need to conquer the challenge of owning one of those adorable Axolotls.
Unlocking the Axolotl Mount in FFXIV
The Megaloambystoma Mount, AKA Axoltol, is arguably one of the most charming mounts in the game. As the official name is a mouthful in FFXIV, we’ll primarily refer to it as Axoltol.
Nothing else is complicated about the mount. The Axoltol Mount is massive, in contrast to any other Axolotol you may see roaming around. It’s already fitted with a saddle too as if just waiting for a rider like you.

So, how do you unlock the Axolotl Mount in FFXIV? Well, the game doesn’t make it easy on you. It’s only received as a reward for finishing the Anabaseios: The Twelfth Circle (Savage). For those unfamiliar, the new Savage tier presents a series of challenging boss battles.
If a raid party defeats the boss for the first time before the weekly reset, the Megaloambystoma Horn is a guaranteed drop. You can use this horn to summon the Axolotl Mount in FFXIV.
Accessing the Twelfth Circle for the Axolotl Mount
As the final Savage battle for Endwalker, it cranks up the Normal difficulty of the usual boss fight. Included in the Twelfth Circle (Savage) is a new phase too. So, if you want an opportunity to get the FF14 Axolotl Mount, you should prepare your character as best as possible.

Before you can access the Savage level, you must defeat the normal difficulty. It all starts with the “Eater of Souls” quest given by Ruissenaud. You can find him in Labyrinthos (x:8.6, y:27.5). From there, complete the following quests before you get the chance to unlock the Axolotl Mount in FFXIV:
- Pandæmonium Awakens
- The Emissary’s Judgment
- A Mother’s Touch
- Guided by the Past
When you finish “Guided by the Past,” meet with Nemjiji in Labyrinthos. You’ll unlock the Savage difficulty from here. All that’s left to do is go through Circles Nine through Eleven to reach the Twelfth Circle.

Like any Savage Raid, you can complete this with a team of friends or jump into the game with a host of strangers. Either way, strategy is vital to success. Everyone should be in the best clock positions for the type of character used. Otherwise, you will find yourself in an impossible fight and lose out on the Axolotl Mount in FFXIV.
There is something that you should note before the battle. Only one person will receive the Megaloambystoma Horn. Therefore, you’ll need to communicate things with your fellow raid members if the mount’s horn drops as to who will get it. Hopefully, you win in the end.
