Helium-3 is one of the many resources you can collect in Starfield. Resources serve as components to use in crafting, making them valuable supplies to gather. Most resources, like Iron, can be mined, yet mining Helium-3 is trickier to harvest. If you mine Helium-3 incorrectly, you may get hurt. Helium-3 can be one of the more lethal resources you’ll try obtaining if you’re not careful. So, let’s explain how to mine Helium-3 in Starfield as safely as possible.
Best Way To Mine Helium-3 in Starfield
After you land on a planet for the first time, you can see the list of resources on the planet’s description. The best way to read a planet’s description is by hitting the R or Lb button while highlighting the world on the Starmap. If a planet has Helium-3, it will be listed in the description. If you haven’t visited the world already, the resource list won’t appear. Kurtz, the moon of Jemison, and the Ananke are the most reliable planets with Helium-3.
Helium-3 will appear on the surface of a planet as gas spewing from small vents in Starfield. You can use your scanner to find patches of Helium in the world. The resource will show up as green on your scanner, but you won’t know for sure until you get close enough to highlight it or interact with it.
You can actually collect Helium-3 by walking towards and interacting with the gas. However, getting near the gas will harm you and possibly inflict the Lung Damage debuff. The debuff will cause you to cough, making you run out of your Oxygen Supply quicker.
Instead of contacting the Helium-3, you should alternatively build an Outpost Beacon near the Helium cluster. With your new Outpost Beacon, enter the Build Menu and create a Helium-3 Extractor. You will need the correct supplies to build the machine, plus a power source to run it.
The resources to create Helium-3 Extractor are:
- Nickel x4
- Aluminum x5
- Copper x3
Once you’ve built the Extractor, run it near the Helium-3 deposit. The machine will begin collecting the Helium-3 for you. The Helium-3 Extractor will indicate to you the current supply.

If you don’t feel like mining or searching for Helium-3, you can buy the resource at the Jemison Mercantile shop in New Atlantis.
Why Do You Need Helium-3 in Starfield?
Helium-3 has a mass of .60 and a value of 14 in Starfield. Helium-3 powers up Fueled Generators in your Outposts. You can store the Helium-3 collected from the Extractor in a Gas Storage Container in your Outpost. The Gas Storage Container can then use the Helium-3 to power up the Fueled Generator indefinitely, as long as the natural resources of the Helium-3 don’t run out on the planet.
