Apex Legend’s Fight or Fright mode is upon us! The only thing standing between you and glory in this limited timed event is… well… a lot of shadows and other players. Here are some strategies that should help ease the burden.
Apex Legends Plan Ahead
Say bye-bye to having a squad in Apex Legends Fight or Fright mode, ongoing until November 5th. The name of the game is way less about eliminating players and much more about survival. Thiry-five legends will jump out of the dropship and with each elimination, a new rank to the shadows (zombie-like enemies) will be added until there are only ten legends left. The remaining survivors will work to reach the dropship shown on the map, get inside and you’re free! If just one of the ten makes it, the legends team wins.
Take note, eliminating other players is great, but to increase chances of winning get that loot. One way or the other, players will fall and become shadows. The mindset should always be for the prize, the dropship. The better, the gear at the end, and the increased chances of making it on that evac. Keep in mind even if downed, crawling into the evac will still net an escape, never give up!
The first ring will be revealed while still in the dropship. Here is where planning becomes important. The name of the game is survival, the closer to the final ring at the end the better. You can land just outside of the first ring, collect loot and keep moving. Straying too far from the first ring can potentially make the match even tougher. Stray too far and you’ll end up fighting against shadows, other players, and the ring. That’s a lot of opposition.
Suit Up
Remember, weapons that pack a punch, or shoot quickly, are your best friends. Look for the following at all times: Eva, Devotion, Spitfire, Flatline, and Havoc. When there are five, ten, or twenty shadows coming at you at once, you’ll want the weapon with a big clip and high firing rate. The Eva can be a huge help, it shoots quick enough and packs a punch. Shadows have to get close to get a hit on you. Hitting one shot from this shotgun should do it. No snipers, single-shot weapons or burst. These will get you killed, reloading and low firing rates are the enemies.
Any armor other than gray is basically useless. Getting hit by a shadow while having gray armor is a one-hit drop. Better to not even waste time with it. Syringes are also pointless, too time-consuming, and a small portion of health is given per shadow (zombie) killed. Only keep on gray armor if it’s all you can find in the beginning. There will be other legends trying to kill you so that’s the only point where it makes sense.
Fight or Fright, Fighting & Frighting Often
For characters, think quick. Sure Caustic has gas traps that slow enemies down but it doesn’t slow or kill the zombies enough to offset his terrible mobility. Watson, Octane and Wraith are the go to’s. Octane can use his abilities to keep a little ahead of the horde. While Wraith has some invulnerability and Watson is good in tight spaces. All that aside, I’ve seen a few players that have been successful with a range of others. For example, Bloodhound’s ability to highlight all the shadows is quite useful, especially during the endgame. Overall, go with whom you feel most confident in, but hopefully one of those is a fast character.
No matter what point of the game it is, beware, shadows can see you better than you can see them. They’re also very fast so keep your head on a swivel and headphones on. Each time they die, they’re respawned by being dropped from above. At any point during the game when they see legends, they’ll be highlighted in red. Remember this as they drop from the sky and can see most of the map as they land. When you kill a shadow, an alert pops up for other shadows on approximately where this occurred. The shadow you killed will also have a spot on the map marked temporarily to show where they died. Best to kill a shadow and quickly move on. Stay inside cover if you can, less likely to be spotted than out in the open. The mode is definitely called Fight or Fright for a reason.
End Game
As soon as there are only ten legends left, the dropship location will become clear. Now is not the time to act like Rambo. It is the time to find your teammates, I’m not saying go way out in the middle of nowhere to get that one player. Start heading towards the dropship and join up with the others as you go. Hang back a bit, no reason to sit right under where the dropship will land, all you’ll end up doing is fighting shadow after shadow, plus they’ll always know where you are. Best to be close to the spot where it will land, with teammates and then storm the gates from an area that is likely to not have the entire swarm waiting. Almost like a back entrance. In other words, bide your time until the dropship lands.
When the dropship lands a famous line comes to mind, “time to nut up or shut up”. You and the squad need to use everything you’ve got, guns blazing, specials used, and ATTACK!!! Most of all though, just get on the evac ship! Once you’re on-board, you’re safe. Pro-tip, if you manage to get on before your teammates, keep shooting! That’s right, you can’t be hit from the dropship, but you can still take down shadows, help your teammates! With all the tips and tricks listed, even still, it will take a bit of luck to make it on the dropship. The odds are stacked against you, but remember you are a legend! Also, you know, have fun with it. Happy Fight or Fright everyone!
