The virtual reality headset the HTC Vive’s recommended specifications and requirements have been revealed.
For a quick comparison, here is a graph showing the requirements for the Vive and Oculus Rift, both virtual reality headsets launching for the PC.
The two headsets have identical graphical and operating system requirements. A notable difference is the CPU requirements, the Rift requires an Intel i5 processor at the least, not compatible with AMD processors. While the Vive is fully functional with both Intel and AMD CPUs. HTC’s Vive will also require half the RAM needed as the Rift, with only 1 USB 2.0 or greater port. The Rift needing 3 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port to function will prevent many consumers from being able to run the system. For video output, the Rift will require an HDMI 1.3 video output, with the Vive needing an HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer to function.
With both headsets competing for similar audiences, the HTC Vive will have an easier time attracting consumers, having the edge in creating a lower barrier-to-entry. For uncertain whether their rig can run a virtual reality, Steam has uploaded a test for users to check if their PC will be able to meet the requirements.
