A TikTok video gained traction online showing a Texas woman speaking down to an employee of Whataburger after she received a burger wrap that wasn’t to her liking.
The video was posted by TikTok user Kiyaanoir, who recorded the confrontational interaction. In the caption of her video, she says, “Another regular day in Huntsville,” along with a second added caption in the video itself: “Like omg maam he said he would make it over” and several laughing-crying emojis.
The customer is then heard explaining the issues she’s having with her burger wrap. She ordered a burger with just lettuce and burger—no buns—and complained about her inability to pick up the burger. Because the lettuce was too small, she needed a “big piece of lettuce” in order to actually hold it.
“Do you know how to make a lettuce burger?” she asks the Whataburger employee, whose several commenters on TikTok knew as Zack. While the customer is speaking to him like a baby, he’s quiet, nodding his head along without making a fuss. “The patty is bigger than the lettuce,” the customer says.
Though Zack tells her he understands, she asks in a condescending tone, “But if you known this, why did you make this? Think about it: If you did this, and you should’ve had sense, how am I supposed to pick this up and eat this?”
Zack relents and tells her he should have “made it right the first time.” However, that’s not enough as the customer makes one more complaint about having to wait for Zack to remake the burger.
Commenters Trash Talk the Customer Online
On TikTok, viewers were pretty disgusted by the customer’s behavior, some of whom seem to know the Whataburger employee by name. Others were also upset that someone, including Kiya, didn’t step in to defend Zack.
“Where is the manager?” TikTok user Xoxo asked. “At this point, nobody would be talking to my employee like this.” Another user argued people need to “start speaking up” when customers act that way.
The dragging continued. A TikTok user by the name of Boo wrote, “She has no business scolding him and speaking to him as if he was a child.” And it’s fast food, too! Whataburger isn’t a ritzy, five-star restaurant. Boo added in their comment thread, noting Zack was “very respectful” despite “being spoken down to.”
Another user, Angieeemonique, brought up a good point, too: “Then all the time she spent talking, the food could’ve been remade and done 😂.”
One viewer, TikTok user Myaaa, tried to defend what she alleged was her “aunty.” The comment thread that followed was nearly 100 commenters making fun of the customer’s weight.
It should go without saying that customers should never speak to service workers in this manner, especially over an issue that could likely be resolved in a matter of minutes. A little patience and understanding can go a long way, particularly when employees are simply trying to do their jobs.
