A Florida woman filmed a dispute with her landlord after she says he called her and her guests thugs. She accused him of racism, but he denied saying anything racist. Commenters mostly sided with her, though some pushed back on whether “thug” was racist.
In a TikTok video shared by @diamondk783, the landlord stands outside a residence as the Florida creator approaches. She says he called her and her guests thugs, but he denies saying anything racist.
When he asks about her criminal record, she questions why he thinks she has one. She points out that she has no arrests and works full time at a state job. Then she questions his own behavior, accusing him of banging on her door and window and screaming her name the night before. The two keep arguing for a few minutes, with both bringing up the police.
In her caption, the creator explains that she wasn’t just putting her business out there. She wanted to show how the man really feels about Black people. She also pushes back on the idea that people of color are all uneducated, ignorant, or underpaid.
Safety Concerns, Support and Pushback
Several people were worried about what the creator might have to deal with next. Some urged her to move, saying the man wasn’t going to stop. Another called him an abusive narcissist and encouraged her to find somewhere else if she could afford it. The location alone was enough for one commenter, who responded with “Of course Florida!“
Support for the creator came with sympathy and advice. “You handled this very well,” one told her, while others apologized for the foolishness she had to deal with. Another added, “SMH those people are tiresome stop reflecting, miserable jealous envy we’re over it don’t give a damn either you join us or figure out but we’re not going anywhere. Black is beautiful. Black is power.” One commenter urged her to get a police report and contact the local news.
However, not everyone agreed that the remarks were discriminatory. “I don’t think thug is racist personally,” a commenter argued, saying people sometimes use the word against them. Another defended the man, accusing her of treating a word that isn’t a slur like one.
A few viewers felt she was giving him too much information. One wanted her to stop sharing her business and focus on making him go viral. Another wouldn’t have spent so much time talking to him, believing “he wants something he can’t have.“
Difficult landlords are a familiar problem for a lot of renters and that relatability seemed to influence how viewers saw the argument. Despite disagreement over the word “thug,” the creator got far more sympathy than criticism for sharing the exchange.
