Quite the telling scene from Seattle, Washington, caught the attention of two particular subreddits involving ICE and a Spanish Bible. Posting to r/pics and r/SeattleWA, Reddit user Baxter_eh shared a photo of a Holy Bible, rolls of painter’s tape, and empty bottles of water. The objects were surrounded by broken glass inside the passenger seat of a car, which OP claims was abandoned after the “abduction.” People in both subreddits had quite the mixed reactions to the rather provocative imagery.
In r/pics, many felt the alleged ICE arrest was an injustice, with the top comment of the post saying that the agents arrested “somebody actually working for a living.” In the replies, people built lore around the individual, saying he was a hard worker and went to church.
Some people used this as an opportunity to use Jesus as a means to criticize ICE’s actions. “One of my favorite parts of the bible is when Jesus and his disciples go from town to town and arrest people,” sarcastically remarked a commenter. “Makes you wonder…How many guys named Jesus have they abducted?” questioned a second, with others sharing Bible verses that could be used against immigrants’ arrests.
Others Felt the Bible Was Being Wrongly Used to Defend the Alleged Arrested Immigrant
On the flip side, many of those in r/SeattleWA felt a completely different way in reaction to Baxter_eh’s post. Here, a solid number of people accused OP of using the Bible as an irrational argument about whether the person should have been arrested by ICE. “We can’t enforce laws because somebody read a Bible,” a person said mockingly of Baxter_eh’s alleged message.
“I thought lefties hated Christianity,” wrote another user. “Oh, so NOW the left embraces religious symbolism. Lol. ‘Dear lord, please continue to shield me from my illegal activities.’ Adios amigo,” mocked a third.
“Maybe you’re not aware of this, but possession of a bible doesn’t automatically make you a good person,” added a fourth. One Redditor even claimed the tape the seemingly Bible-believing “illegal immigrant” had was “kidnapper-grade duct tape.”
In the end, Baxter_eh didn’t really explain what happened in detail in their posts besides a link to an ICEOut page. Yet a picture of a Bible, some random tape, and broken glass in a car led thousands of people to their own different interpretations of what they saw. Oftentimes, people will see what they choose to see, which could be said to be the ‘real story’ here.
