With hopes of a better future for them and their family, Reddit user PierreEscargot_ says they left their home in Atlanta, Georgia, to find greener pastures in San Antonio, Texas. However, not only were there no greener pastures in a literal sense, but things turned out to be far from what Pierre expected. In just four months, the Georgian family had already left Texas, without even finishing their renter’s lease. For them, things were that bad.
Pierre began their post by explaining how life in Atlanta was draining them, not just mentally but financially as well. On the other hand, a random article said San Antonio was “one of the best cities in Texas for Black professionals.” Not only was there promise of a more affordable life, but things in general seemed to be better as well, from what Pierre read.
“I was overconfident and thought I wouldn’t have any issues finding a government job based on my background, but I was dead wrong,” Pierre wrote with disappointment. They listed all the reasons why they believe San Antonio was not the right choice for them and their family, starting with accusing the city of having the “worst job market.”
Pierre called out Texas for having bad roads, infrastructure, and parks, adding that the hot weather and insects were so much worse than they could have imagined. OP also had some choice thoughts for H-E-B, saying that “Kroger is way better.” All that being said, Pierre couldn’t even bother until their lease was up to find a job, but instead applied elsewhere in the Southeast and claims they found an agreeable position within a week.
Pierre Claims They Found a Job in a Week of Searching Outside of Texas
In short, Pierre says they found a nice job within 7 days of searching in the Southeast, whereas San Antonio offered them nothing promising after 4 months, on top of the other negatives. In the post’s comments, people had mixed feelings about Pierre’s opinions, with many claiming OP’s thoughts on H-E-B were blasphemous. Joking aside, a good number of people agreed with the negatives mentioned.
The top commenter calls Texas a “basically failed state” that’s “overhyped by people who don’t like seeing the word ‘tax’ on their paycheck.” However, add in the other disadvantages and factors of living in the area, and things allegedly look a lot more grim. “San Antonio imo is one of the worst cities you could move to for job opportunities and parks,” expressed another.
In conclusion, Pierre expected something vastly different about life in San Antonio and seemingly didn’t set their expectations correctly, as many commenters put it. However, one remark OP added is telling: “I did wonder if my last name was Garcia, or Fernandez would I had a better chance.” One person wrote in response, “Disparaging Hispanics because you possess less foresight than a twelve-year-old is crazy.”
