ICE’s presence in America is already making so many communities and families on edge. But to make matters worse, ICE agents are reportedly beginning to leave ominous tarot cards at detainment sites. Now, an Oregon Senator is speaking out about these disgraceful acts and how they compare to what White supremacist groups used to do here in America. He also touches on how he’s playing an important role in trying to stop ICE.
TikToker @lulacorg shared a video of Oregon Senator John Hickenlooper talking about the new thing ICE agents are doing as a scare tactic in America. They’re apparently placing “death cards” at detainment sites when they take immigrants to facilities. Agents will leave these tarot cards on vehicles and other areas where an individual or family was removed by ICE. Then, when families of the loved ones arrive at that area, they find the cards and know that ICE took their loved one.
What makes this even worse is that these Ace of Spades cards were historically left behind by White supremacist groups. They have a long history of being used as tools of intimidation by groups of White supremacists. This was used to demean and scare POC. Now, an investigation has been launched after these cards were found left behind in Colorado when ICE agents arrested immigrants. These arrests would take place at fake traffic stops. Then, families are left wondering where their loved ones are being taken. It’s a horrific time in our history and John Hickenlooper says it has to end. In his words, “We need to stop ICE officers beating Americans.”
Hickenlooper touched on the presence of these cards in Colorado by sharing facts. He also shared his stance on ICE in his home state and how he wants them out. He stated, “This morning, I voted against government funding that would have handed billions of dollars to DHS.” It’s clear where he stands even though so many other politicians in the state have differing views. From some supporting ICE presence in major Colorado cities to others wanting to defund the organization, it’s not clear where this will lead as of yet.
One commenter shared his own knowledge on these cards, “Death cards were also used by the military in wars… not good either way.” One commenter went on to share that these cards were placed during human round-ups when Jewish citizens were taken to concentration camps in Germany. It’s a heartbreaking piece of history that should never be forgotten. Now, politicians are speaking up so that piece of history doesn’t repeat itself in entirety.
