Stella’s Diner, located in Chicago, Illinois, has been shut down after failing an inspection. This occurred after officials found cockroaches, among other health code violations. Locals have a surprising reaction to the news, with many celebrating in the TikTok video’s comments. The video has over 113,000 views and nearly 6,000 likes.
The diner is located in the Lakeview neighborhood, and reportedly failed two inspections before the closure. The Illinois restaurant has a sign posted on its doors that reads, “License suspended.” The report reveals that during the first inspection, “two live cockroaches and over 50 trapped roaches and roach carcasses were found.” This is in addition to other cleanliness violations. When officials came back for a follow-up inspection, things hadn’t improved. The report states that they found “issues with wastewater disposal, damaged floors, [and an] accumulation on bathroom vents.” There are also reports that the diner has failed inspections in the past.
According to Illinois locals in the comments, this is not the first location in the Chicago area to be shut down. One says, “There’s gotta be someone new on the job cuz they’ve been shutting down all kinds of spots this week.” This refers to Magnolia Bakery, which had its license suspended for similar violations. Locals have taken to the comments with an unusual reaction to the shutdown. One says, “Somebody is doing their job, finally.”
Illinois Locals Are Celebrating
Many Illinois locals claim they aren’t surprised by the news. Some even reveal their own experience with roaches in restaurants. One commenter claims they previously found a rat’s tail in their food during a visit to the diner. Others have suggestions for Chicago officials, such as, “They need to do Potbelly in Hyde Park.” Another says, “I got a LIST of places they should inspect.”
Several are celebrating restaurants shut down for violating health codes. One commenter says, “First Magnolia Bakery, now this place, I’m glad the city is doing something right.” Another says, “Thank God I never ate there, heard stories about the food made with roach love.” Another commenter is surprised at the existence of cockroaches, but believes there is a line. They state, “Every restaurant has roaches, when they’re crawling on the food and in the fridges it’s a different story.”
It is unknown how long the diner will be shut down, or if they’ll be able to reopen in the future.
