A video from a Maine Democratic Senate candidates’ debate hosted by News Center Maine shows long-shot candidate Ashley Webb responding to a moderator’s question about her qualifications to serve in the U.S. Senate. Webb replied that she is a songwriter and writes her own books. The exchange, part of a forum for contenders seeking the party’s nomination to challenge Sen. Susan Collins, has drawn significant online attention with users reacting to her answer.

The video shows a moderator asking Ashley Webb, “What qualifications do you have to serve in the U.S. Senate?” In the clip, Webb responds, “Oh, I ran for office several times, didn’t win but did run, and then I’m a songwriter, and then I write my own books, and then as opposed to my transparency, I won’t lie to people, and I won’t deceive the people like we are being deceived right now.” The footage focuses on this exchange at the podiums and does not show the full debate, questions posed to the other candidates, or events immediately before or after.

The debate took place as part of the process to select a replacement Democratic nominee following the withdrawal of the prior candidate. Ashley Webb has positioned herself as a long-shot contender in the race.

How Viewers Are Responding to Webb’s Senate Qualifications Answer

Some commenters compared the exchange to a comedy sketch, with one writing, “Is this an SNL skit….are we living in an SNL ‘reality’ by these *expletive* on the left??”

Others described the moment as “What a *expletive* joke” or called it “a laughing stock.”

Additional comments questioned the candidate’s response and the party’s decision to include them. One stated, “What’s amazing is not that this mentally ill man is a Democrat; what’s amazing is the Democrat Party puts him on stage as a candidate. You Democraps have lost your minds.”

Several others focused on the candidate’s presentation, including remarks such as “Man calling himself a woman says he wouldn’t lie to the people.”

Some viewers expressed broader surprise at the qualifications cited or the setting of the debate itself, with one asking for “a list of the people that vote for him …” and another noting that “Dead people have won seats. The criteria must not be that stringent.”

The debate over candidate qualifications in Maine’s Senate race continues as Democrats prepare for their nominating convention. Webb’s response has become one more point in the wider conversation about the field challenging Sen. Susan Collins.
