A viral TikTok video showing a brief exchange between a Florida Black man and a white individual has divided the internet over whether the encounter had racial undertones. The man who shared the clip, @kielhoilett, said he was waiting in his car around 4 p.m. when a stranger approached his side window and asked him to leave the area. The reason? The stranger didn’t want him to hit his truck.
The Florida man assured the other driver that he wasn’t going to hit the truck and even explained that he was only waiting for someone. He also pointed out that his vehicle didn’t have any dents from an accident. Still, the other driver continued to ask him to leave.
At one point, the stranger suddenly asked him where he was from. He replied that he wasn’t from the area and asked the other driver the same question. The stranger said he had grown up there before once again insisting he didn’t want his truck to be hit.
The Florida man responded that he had never been involved in a car accident and repeated that had no intention of hitting the vehicle.
The other driver eventually walked away after that.
Netizens’ Reaction to the Florida Man’s Video
As of now, the video has gained over 700,000 views and more than 100,000 likes. In the comments, many viewers were shocked by the other driver’s behavior and believed the Florida man had been singled out because he is Black.
“The absolute audacity of some people. Nuts,” one comment read. “Ppl dont know how to mind they [sic] damn business,” another wrote. A third said, “Existing And Being Black shouldn’t be a reason to be accosted or harassed.” A fourth commented, “It makes me wonder if he purposely did that to get a bad reaction to call the cops .. like. The more I see the more I’m so disgusted with the white race.”
Some even criticized the Florida man for being cordial with the stranger. “You were WAY too accommodating. Far more patient than I would have been,” one person remarked. A different netizen chimed in, “Don’t give them the time of day. they always feel entitled to an answer from a brown person smh.” Someone else wrote, “I don’t understand why y’all keep engaging with these folks… soon as a white person come up to my window I’m not letting it down.” Another joked that when the man asked where he was from, the answer should have been, “yo mama house.”
Meanwhile, some netizens weren’t convinced race had anything to do with the encounter. They felt the man didn’t come across as racist at all and instead seemed confused or disoriented. A few even wondered if he may have been intoxicated or suffering from dementia.
The other driver was never seen on camera, so it remains unclear what condition he was in. The man who shared the video also has not posted any updates about what happened after the encounter.
