A montage of volleyball player Jordan Lucas is making its rounds on social media, with many commenting on his quirky way of celebrating good plays. A montage of volleyball player Jordan Lucas is making its rounds on social media, with many commenting on his quirky way of celebrating good plays. It’s pretty typical in sports in general, but sports commentator Charlie Brande wasn’t thrilled. This resulted in an Indiana influencer calling the commentator out for his double standard.
TikTok user Schmittly (Arielle) posted her response video on Charlie Brande’s outlandish commentary to a montage of Jordan Lucas celebrating. Additionally, Arielle also shared a clip of what sports commentator Charlie Brande said while on air, saying, “I’m amazed Jordan Lucas hasn’t been popped by somebody,” and called Jordan’s “antics” as “distasteful.”
Arielle, who normally comments on women’s sports, immediately put Charlie Brande on blast, equating his rather nasty comment as a symptom of patriarchy. She argues that is entirely because Jordan is male and chooses to celebrate in a “feminine” way. “That’s rooted in a system—the patriarchy—that equates masculinity with legitimacy.”
She goes further by calling it out for what it is: a double standard. Arielle brings up the most common celebratory gestures you see male athletes often do: pounding their chest, shouting, flexing. If Jordan had done what most male athletes do, “this would zero percent be a conversation.” However, for some reason Charlie Brande felt the need to call him out for a hair flip.
Arielle, for one, celebrates Jordan’s sass on the field. “As soon as he flips his proverbial hair, he’s bringing femininity and dominance over men into the same frame. And people deeply rooted in the patriarchy start to feel a little uncomfortable.”
Reactions Pour In After Arielle Calls Out Jordan Lucas Over Volleyball Commentary
Many comments on Arielle’s TikTok video were in support of how Jordan was celebrating, while mocking sports commentator Charlie Brande. “His teammates LOVE him!! WE love him! There is nothing wrong with what he’s doing!” one TikTok user wrote, while another said, “Are you kidding me??? Volleyball viewership is about to skyrocket!!!”
Others were quite enthusiastic, going as far as to say they’d be watching volleyball now, thanks to Jordan Lucas. “He’s going to get so many people to watch volleyball! Including me!” a viewer wrote, while another admitted they “never” cared about volleyball but were “obsessed” with Jordan Lucas.
One TikTok user agreed with Arielle’s take on Jordan’s quirky celebratory gestures, calling him a “diva” and that he was “shaking up the patriarchy.” A second viewer thanked Arielle for bringing this to everyone’s attention and for “helping raise awareness of this stigma and misogyny.”
Of the top comments, the one that got the most traction was one that called out the double-standard, noting, “Meanwhile, I grew up with boys in 5th-6th grade yelling suck it and doing this.” They posted a photo of wrestler Triple H doing a pelvic thrust, which he did quite often.
