The Day Before is an open-world zombie MMO that puts you up against other players and zombies in the apocalypse. You get to explore beautiful landscapes and ruins to find everything you need to survive, upgrading your equipment as you go. While the multiplayer survival aspect is nice, the game plays similarly to an extraction shooter. Is The Day Before an extraction shooter, or are there different gameplay aspects to differentiate it?
The Day Before Is Currently An Extraction Shooter
While it’s too early to say if The Day Before is meant to be an extraction shooter, the gameplay is similar. You drop in, fight zombies and other players, grab loot, and leave. There isn’t much variety in the gameplay, with fighting and building the only things you can do. Building a base requires items, which forces you to go back and compete with other players.
Extraction shooters follow the same pattern: jump in, fight, get out, and profit. The Day Before repeats the same thing, only you go back to base and try to build it up. You must choose between upgrading your equipment or building your base to make it safer from other threats. There are no other activities, which means you must repeatedly go into zones and fight.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with being an extraction shooter because they can be enjoyable games. But hopefully, there will be more plans to expand on the gameplay to stand out from similar games in the market. Previous game footage showed a variety of open-world elements and other activities you could do. Along with controller support, they can improve the game and provide more opportunities for players to interact with the world.
