Anti-Islamic outrage erupted online after a video showed hijabi women walking through New York streets while the call to prayer played in the background.

The video shared on X focused on the women’s religion, with the account that posted it, @EndWokeness, expressing outrage over the scene in its caption. “Islamic call to prayer blasting. Women are all covered up in hijabs. This isn’t Kabul, this is Mamdani’s NYC,” the account wrote.

In the video, the Islamic call to prayer could be heard throughout the street. Known as the adhan, it is a religious call announcing the time for one of the five daily Islamic prayers and is traditionally recited aloud so Muslims in the surrounding area can hear it and know that prayer time has begun.

While the call to prayer was playing, the cameraperson continued filming as several hijabi women walked through the street. The video quickly drew reactions online, including Islamophobic comments.

Some people blamed Mamdani for what they described as the increased visibility of Muslims in New York City, including the presence of the call to prayer in the video. However, Muslims have been part of New York City’s population long before Mamdani became mayor, and the presence of hijabi women or the adhan in the city did not begin with his administration. The reactions instead connected the scene to Mamdani because of his own Muslim background and his role in the city’s government.

Viewers Express Outrage Over Hijabi Women in New York

After the video of the New York streets was shared, many viewers expressed outrage over the sight of the hijabi women and the sound of the call to prayer. Many of the comments included Islamophobic rhetoric. “Make America normal again! SMDH,” one person wrote. Another person said, “Sharia (Islamic law) fully allows and mandates the call to prayer, known as the Adhan, for the morning prayer (Fajr) But people say Sharia law doesn’t happen in America yet, well I guess this in all in our heads then.”

More people continued leaving Islamophobic comments under the video. One person wrote, “Many people thought this would never happen when I posted it before the muslim terrorist @NYCMayor got elected. Yet, here we are…lol…I mean, there THEY are. We don’t put up with this [expletive] where I live.” Another person said, “Islam has come to conquer and they will do it by any means necessary. They will pretend to support LGBT and they will pretend to support Marxism just as long as the crescent reigns above all government buildings and towers of man.”

The video drew attention to the hostility some Americans expressed toward seeing Muslims in the country, particularly in response to the women and the call to prayer shown in the footage. The reactions also underscored the divide between those expressing opposition to Islam and those emphasizing tolerance and acceptance despite differences in religious beliefs.
