While driving down the California freeway on a “time-sensitive” schedule, a man was left stunned when a highway patrol officer started performing some erratic swerves across the road. Realizing the cop was doing a traffic break, Reddit user Skankhunt1738 shared footage of the cop’s maneuver on r/dashcams. Considering he was already allegedly tight on time, OP was upset about the officer’s decision and had some choice words in his video.
“It was that already on top of more traffic,” OP wrote, explaining his reason for being so seemingly angry. “It was more of an ‘aww beans’ moment. But emotions let an ‘I’m [expletive] rip.” While Redditors could doubtless understand the driver’s frustration, many users were quite bamboozled over this “traffic break” the highway patrol was performing.
Many Redditors Claim to Have Never Seen a Traffic Break Before
“I have absolutely no idea what’s happening here, nor do I know what a traffic break is,” remarked a commenter. “To me, it just looks like the cop is drunk,” they wrote, and hundreds of others upvoted in agreement with their confusion. “Me too. I couldn’t figure out what the cop was doing,” said another.
Several people claimed they’ve never witnessed a traffic break before. “I have never seen this done in the mid-south states I’ve lived in,” expressed a Redditor. “Not saying it doesn’t happen, but will say I’ve been driving for 30 years.” Another user claiming to be 74 years old said they’ve never seen one as well. “I must live a cloistered life. I’ve never heard nor seen of a traffic break. Thanks to all of you who explained so well and why.”
For those unaware, plenty of people in the comments did their best to explain exactly why a California highway patrol officer would suddenly swerve about the highway like this. “It’s to slow traffic down, but not necessarily stop it, in order to allow an incident to be cleared ahead,” wrote one person. “It may look like they do this for no reason but there’s usually something worth doing it up ahead,” pointed out a second user.
In the end, though, regardless of whether people have seen a traffic break or not, more than enough people agreed that they caught on why OP found the situation annoying. Safety is crucial out on the road, but being inconvenienced by the authorities for the sake of it is often not a pleasant experience.
