When a Georgia woman felt she was being targeted by a rude employee at a grocery store, she didn’t stay quiet. She decided to stand up for herself for doing something that all the other customers in the store were already doing.
Tay (@tay.remi) says she was “profiled” by an employee at a grocery store while she was doing her shopping. So, what did she do that triggered the employee to admonish her in the first place? According to Tay, she was filling up her grocery bags after scanning her items, and then putting them in the cart. The employee told her she couldn’t do that while she still had other groceries in the cart that she was waiting to scan.
Tay wasn’t about to stay silent when she saw all the other shoppers were doing the same thing, as it’s a fairly normal way to scan groceries. Tay records the employee and waits until a manager arrives. She tells the manager that it “isn’t a rule” to scan your items how she was scanning. She continues, “Nobody was told that they have to take their stuff out” as she gestures around at the other shoppers.
The manager says there is no “rule” for this but clearly wants to avoid pointing fingers. Tay said she doesn’t want to “escalate” things but wants the manager to speak personally with the employee. The manager refuses to fight with her on the issue. However, she gives Tay the store number so she can speak with higher-ups about the situation.
At some point, another manager arrives and she explains to him what happened. She said it feels as if she was being told how to scan her groceries. Tay says it feels like they were accusing her of “stealing something.” She asks for an apology from the employee. The manager brings the employee over. He tells her that Tay is allowed to continuously put her groceries in the cart while she’s still actively scanning. The employee responds with, “I understand that.” She then apologizes to Tay, but only after Tay demands it.
The video immediately sparked reactions from commenters with varying opinions about the situation. Many people agreed that Tay handled the situation with grace. One commenter stated, “Not only did you do a great job but I love how the manager brought her over to tell her IN FRONT OF YOU that this was not a rule!” Another commenter shared, “You handled this with class. I could hear the hurt in your voice but you did an excellent job.”
Other commenters made quips about how the employee clearly didn’t want to apologize for the accusations. One commenter stated, “That was a raggedy apology.” Another commented, “She did not want to say sorry.” Commenters continue to flood the video, sharing comments about people taking accountability for their actions in all settings.
