Kate Upton is sparking complaints on Instagram as a gallery of photos opening with her in a see-through dress raises eyebrows. In September, the 32-year-old model shared snaps from her CR Fashion Book feature, one marking the magazine’s 12th birthday.
Kate, who fronted the very first CRFB issue, turned heads for her figure, but a photo of the blonde holding a lit cigarette has left fans outraged. Users lashed out by the masses in the comments, expressing concern for the message Kate was sending out as smoking in photo shoots is these days largely obsolete. Fans mentioned the cancer-causing habit throughout the comments section, although some didn’t jump to conclusions and asked if Kate is a smoker. The Sports Illustrated bombshell hasn’t been photographed with a cigarette in years, but she made 2013 headlines for smoking in the street in New York City.

Flaunting her hourglass figure from a studio, Kate posed in a sheer brown midi dress for her first photo.
Displaying her enviable waistline in a belted look that flashed her two-piece undies beneath, the mom of one stretched out both her arms, wearing tan shoes and a head cap while looking a million miles from her usual bombshell finish.
Talk in the comments, however, centered around the fourth slide. Here, Kate posed close up while in a hooded dress as she held a cigarette that looked like it had mostly been smoked. In a caption, she wrote: “Pre-order your copy of CR Fashion Book Issue 25: Love & Fantasies” while quoting a portion of the magazine’s feature.
Told ‘Put That Cancer Stick Away’
Appalled, one fan replied: “Put that cancer stick away.” Also commenting on the cigarette, another said: “Please tell me you are NOT a smoker. It will break my heart,” with a third asking: “Smoking, really?”
Kate’s photos did not confirm that she is a smoker; however, users nonetheless felt that a high-profile and idolized star holding a cigarette just wasn’t okay.
That said, some defended Kate. “People still telling you what to do in the comments, that’s crazy,” one fan replied. The photos come in the wake of May 2024 headlines Kate made for returning to SI Swim to front the magazine amid its 60th-anniversary celebrations.
Showing off her eye-popping curves in a two-piece, Kate thrilled her 6.6 million Instagram followers with her return, with the birthday feature also welcoming stars including Tyra Banks and Chrissy Teigen.
Kate does not appear to have responded to the backlash.
