In a recent interview on the subject of acclaimed actor Robert Downey Jr., Marvel Cinematic Universe creative head Kevin Feige promised that the iconic Iron Man MCU death witnessed by fans in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame will never be undone. There has been speculation among many in recent years, especially with the waning attention towards new MCU media, that Marvel Studios may try to bring back actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans to reprise their roles and refresh attention.
The post-Endgame Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a roller coaster ride. Marvel Studios pushed its output into overdrive, resulting in less attention coming towards various recent releases like Secret Wars or The Marvels. In the midst of these troubles, the man forever at the helm of the MCU, Kevin Feige, is promising fans, whether to the pleasure or chagrin of some, that Iron Man will not be brought back to life after his climactic death in Endgame.
Not Undoing The Iron Man MCU Death
The confirmation comes in an interview Feige did for Vanity Fair concerning Downey’s career and the massive resurgence he saw after making the initial Iron Man film in 2008. In regards to rumors that RDJ may one day return, Feige states, “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”
In the Marvel comics, death is certainly anything but permanent. Characters like Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Jean Grey, and many more have died and been resurrected on numerous occasions. The MCU has dabbled in this a bit with characters like Gomorra, but there does seem to be some concerted effort to make death a more tangible thing, which ultimately does give an onscreen death a lot more weight.
