Critical Role, Dark Horse, and Amazon announced an upcoming prequel series for the animated Legend of Vox Machina show. The series will feature interconnected stories from characters in both the animated series and the original D&D stream. It is written by previous Critical Role collaborator Marieke Nijkamp with art from illustrator Tyler Walpole. The cast of Critical Role also plays a, well role, in the collaboration process.
The Legend of Vox Machina: Whitestone Chronicles – Ripley
The first of these prequels is The Legend of Vox Machina: Whitestone Chronicles – Ripley. As you may have guessed, it focuses on the villainous Dr. Anna Ripley. She has a dark past with Taliesin Jaffie’s Percy De Rolo. The book focuses on Ripley and the choices she makes once Percy’s family is overthrown and the Briarwoods seize control of Whitestone.
Of course, fans of the Critical Role stream will already be familiar with Anna Ripley and her inevitable end within the campaign/series. However, her origins are less known amongst fans.
Sneak Peek!
While the book is not expected until sometime next year, a digital sampler is now available. You can check it out on the Amazon storefront, Dark Horse digital, and other digital reading platforms. You can also check out Tyler Walpole’s amazing cover art, which features the titular Ripley holding some type of arcane device as her notes fly around her.
Meanwhile, fans of Critical Role will be familiar with Marieke Nijkamp’s work. She is the author behind the tie-in novel Critical Role: Vox Machina Kith and Kin. This followed the twins Vex and Vax as they relied only on each other to make it through the harsh world of Exandria.
The second season of The Legend of Vox Machina is currently airing every Friday on Prime Video. It was recently announced that another animated series from Critical Role would be coming to Prime. This time it will focus on The Mighty Nein, the cast of characters from the second campaign.
