Liam Payne‘s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, didn’t learn about his death through social media like most people. In a new interview, the influencer confirmed she had heard about the One Direction star’s tragic passing through a friend. Although she feels “blessed” that someone had personally broken the news to her, it didn’t make the situation any easier. In fact, Cassidy was apparently so overwhelmed by her boyfriend’s death that she “blacked out.”
Liam Payne’s Girlfriend Speaks Out Following His Death In Argentina
Kate Cassidy recalled the night of Liam Payne’s death in an emotional conversation with The Sun. She told the publication that she was scrolling through TikTok at their home in Florida when she suddenly got a call from one of Payne’s friends, who would go on to inform her of the singer’s fatal fall in Argentina. Initially, Cassidy admitted she didn’t believe it. “I thought it was just a rumor,” she said. “Or something that somebody made up just to get views.”
However, since she couldn’t understand why someone would spread something so awful, Cassidy had a “bad feeling” about the whole thing.
The 25-year-old influencer said she couldn’t remember much else of that phone call since she “blacked out” shortly afterward. “I felt numb,” she said.
Since she was still in denial, Cassidy tried to call her boyfriend to no avail. She also reached out to “everybody” she knew for more information. Cassidy said she was so distraught the night of Liam Payne’s death that she kept pacing around her house and couldn’t even sleep.
Eventually, she got in touch with Payne’s family, and that’s when reality seemingly set in. Cassidy admitted feeling guilty over how things turned out. Since she had been with Payne days before his death, she said she “would never have left Argentina” if she knew what was going to happen.
The Couple Had Planned to Get Married
Liam Payne and Kate Cassidy dated from October 2022 until his death in October 2024. They were vacationing together in Argentina when Cassidy had to return home to take care of the couple’s dog, Nala. Unfortunately, days later, Payne fell to his death from a hotel balcony.
Following the incident, Cassidy posted an emotional tribute to the late pop star on Instagram. In her message, she revealed that Payne had planned to get engaged to Cassidy and later marry her. He supposedly wrote about their future in a note just weeks before his fall. While the couple didn’t get to be “together forever” like they had wanted, Cassidy said Payne would “always” be with her. “I’ve gained a guardian angel,” she said in her post.
Liam Payne’s funeral was held in November 2024. Cassidy flew to England for the service. The star’s One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan also attended.
Since then, Malik has continued paying tribute to Payne during his concerts. Rumor has it he and the rest of the band will also honor Payne during the 2025 Brit Awards on March 1. It would mark the guys’ first reunion since their split a decade ago.
