Lucy Liu Opens Up About Confronting Bill Murray On-Set Over ‘Inexcusable’ Insults: ‘It’s an Innate Thing To Do If You Feel There’s Injustice’

A fall from grace?

Hollywood is full to the brim with big egos and big personalities, and that’s understandably a recipe for behind-the-scenes clashes during production. One that’s caught the public’s attention in recent years centers on one of the most beloved actors in cinema, Bill Murray, who is not only a comedy legend, but an award-winning star who boasts a loveable and endearingly charming on-screen persona. However, allegations of inappropriate behavior and workplace misconduct have hounded the 74-year-old actor over the last few years. One such allegation, which came to light in 2021, involves Lucy Liu during the filming of Charlie’s Angels.

In an interview conducted over Zoom with The Guardian to promote Lucy Liu’s upcoming psychological thriller Presence, the 56-year-old actress opened up about her on-set fallout with the Ghostbusters and Lost in Translation star. Upon asking why she spoke out about the actor, Liu explained:

I really didn’t think about it. I would have done that in any situation. I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself. It’s an innate thing to do if you feel there’s injustice, and I always feel that way.

Adding more detail to the situation, Liu went on record to say that she could’ve stayed quiet and taken the rude comments without speaking out. However, she believed that that wouldn’t have been the right thing to do. Continuing on, Liu divulged: “If I was, it would have been a much easier road. But because I’ve never been that person, we had to find a way. I think there has never been an easy road, for me and for us – and I say ‘us’, because I really think it’s a group effort.” Interestingly, the ‘us’ Liu’s referring to here are the Asian-American actors who worked in Hollywood before her.

While details of the alleged confrontation remain vague, reports of a major altercation between Murray and Liu on-set during the production of Charlie’s Angels led to significant tension among the cast and crew. Liu even described the language Murray used during the clash as “inexcusable and unacceptable.” This incident, however, was not the first or the last allegation made against Murray.

In fact, over the years, several allegations have surfaced ranging from Richard Dreyfuss calling Murray a “drunken bully” during the filming of 1991’s What About Bob? to Geena Davis claiming that he harassed her in her memoir. On top of that, Murray had to pay a $100,000 settlement fee to a “much younger” female crew member on the project Being Mortal in 2022, who filed a complaint against the actor. This ultimately resulted in the pic getting canned and never seeing the light of day.

While we may not know all of the ins and outs of Liu and Murray’s on-set dispute, it’s fair to say that controversy has followed the Groundhog Day star over the past few years. As the Hollywood industry continues to evolve, Liu’s timely comments are a stark reminder of mutual respect on and off screen.
