Sony Pictures was set to release its first woman-led superhero flick next summer, but it has delayed the release date of Madame Web from July 7, 2023, to October 6, 2023. While the studio did not specify its reasoning, the film was going to have tough competition with The Flash releasing on July 23, 2023, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on June 2. Then you have the juggernaut of the superhero genre, Marvel Studios releasing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5 and The Marvels on July 28. It would be too crowded, and a lesser-known character facing Flash, the return of Ms. Marvel with Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau, and the return of the animated Spider-People could lead to a difficult time for the Dakota Johnson-led film.
The cast, crew, and the news about a delayed release date for Madame Web is all that we know. While the plot is under wraps, it is supposedly going to be more like Doctor Strange with Spider-Man ties with an early 2000s setting in Boston.
Madame Web release date delayed
Over the last few months, when things seemed to be set in stone before Madame Web was delayed, it has consistent casting updates. Most recently, Adam Scott (Severance) was cast for an unknown role. With Dakota Johnson playing the titular role, they will be joined by Mike Epps, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, and Tahar Rahim. S.J. Clarkson (Anatomy of a Scandal) will direct, with Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless writing the script.
With the casting of a younger actor with Johnson being 32, along with other reports about the twist on the character, comic book fans will likely get a unique story with the character. The source material follows an elderly woman tied to a spider web of medical equipment; she uses her psychic powers for good. She is known as an ally to Spider-Man after discovering that he is Peter Parker.
