MAGA California comedian Adam Carolla sparked outrage online after making controversial remarks about rape while discussing the allegations against Graham Platner.
Graham Platner’s Senate campaign came under intense scrutiny after his former girlfriend, Jenny Racicot, accused him of raping her during an encounter at her home in late 2021. Racicot alleged that Platner entered her home while intoxicated and sexually assaulted her despite her repeatedly telling him to stop. Platner has denied the allegation, calling it false and maintaining that the encounter was consensual.
While many Democratic leaders and allies withdrew their support following the accusation, some supporters defended Platner, arguing that the allegation had not been proven in court and that he should be afforded due process before being judged. Platner later suspended his Senate campaign while continuing to deny the allegations.
The comedian addressed the allegations on his podcast, where comments he made were widely interpreted by viewers as dismissing rape. Discussing the accusations against Platner, Carolla said, “Most every guy I know did what he’s [Graham Platner] being accused of at one point or another with their girlfriend at some point after a night of drinking. It’s basically like: I’m drunk, I’m horny, I weigh 50 pounds more than you, we’re gonna have sex, it’s not really rape because we sleep in the same bed.”
Carolla continued discussing the allegations by saying, “We’ve been calling everything rape and I don’t think that’s a good idea.” His remarks quickly sparked widespread criticism online, with many viewers accusing him of minimizing or dismissing allegations of sexual assault.
Viewers Outraged Over MAGA California Comedian’s Comments
Many viewers expressed outrage after hearing what the MAGA California comedian had to say while discussing the allegations. The backlash quickly spread across social media, with many criticizing Carolla’s remarks. “I feel so sorry for his wife,” one person wrote. Another commenter replied by pointing out that Carolla is divorced and is currently dating another woman, writing that she “thinks she’s a comedian.”
More viewers criticized Carolla over his comments, with some interpreting his remarks as admissions of criminal behavior. “He’s just out here admitting to sex crimes,” one person alleged. Another wrote, “This is essentially a confession of rape.” Someone else added, “Adam Carolla has been the biggest piece of [expletive] since his 90s radio talk show days and the fact that he casually admits to raping girlfriends is very on brand for him. One day we’ll stop platforming the worst [expletive] men in the world.” These comments reflect the opinions of individual social media users.
The comedian’s comments sparked a conversation about attitudes toward sexual assault, with many viewers arguing that his remarks minimized or dismissed the seriousness of rape allegations. It also led to broader discussions about whether public figures who make statements perceived as downplaying sexual assault should continue to be given large public platforms.
