Insomniac Games released a new story trailer for Spider-Man 2 yesterday along with a slick new PlayStation 5 console, and it not only showed off more gameplay but also what we can expect from the new rogue’s gallery. The trailer finally put all the discussions to rest about who this new Venom is in Spider-Man 2, and possibly even where it comes from. While it still isn’t completely certain, all signs so far point to Harry becoming the new slimy symbiote in Spider-Man 2.
The trailer starts off with Harry talking to Peter. This is the first time we see him, as Harry was critically ill in the first game, but had vanished under the guise of working abroad. He tells Peter that he appreciates his second lease on life and wants to make the most of it. Harry finishes by saying “We are going to heal the world” together.
The Story Trailer Seems to Be Setting up Harry as the New Venom in Spider-Man 2
Peter then introduces Harry to his friends, which include Mary Jane and Miles, and then the trailer switches to some combat and traversal which – you guessed it – shows Peter sporting the new black Venom suit. In classic Venom fashion, the suit enhances his powers across the board, but this comes at the cost of his mental stability. In the first Spider-Man 2 gameplay reveal trailer, we can see Peter saving a civilian, but then proceeding to throw them on the ground, which shows the massive change in his personality.
The trailer eventually has a voice-over of Venom repeating Harry’s words verbatim: “We are going to heal the world.” This is the biggest hint that Harry is indeed the new Venom in Spider-Man 2. Venom is then finally revealed in all his oversized glory, easily destroying a twin-turbine aircraft with his bare hands. At first, fans believed that there might be a bait and switch and that Eddie Brock would show up somehow and become Venom. But the developers shot down those rumors a while ago, confirming that Eddie will not be Venom in Spider-Man 2.
If Harry is Venom in Spider-Man 2, it most likely also means that Green Goblin will be a no-show in the game, because two major villains from one family might be a bit much. Seemingly the only possibility of Norman Osborn becoming the Green Goblin is if Harry somehow does not survive the events of Spider-Man 2.
The Possibly New Origin of Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Venom has been around for decades, originally introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #252 way back in May 1984. The symbiote was later revealed to be an alien parasite that empowers its host while slowly taking control of their mind. Originally created by an entity older than the universe itself, Knull the Venom god, the different symbiotes were specifically made to destroy all life.
But it is possible that the origin of Venom might not be the same in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Instead of the original extraterrestrial origin, Venom might be a conception of Oscorp made in an attempt to heal Harry. Regardless of which origin Insomniac has opted for, it remains to be seen whether this Venom can produce further, more powerful forms like Carnage, Bedlam, Toxin, or even Anti-Venom (who is present in the original Spider-Man game as an unlockable suit).
No matter what ends up happening, Insomniac’s upcoming web-slinging experience is sure to be a wild ride. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20 of this year on the PlayStation 5 exclusively. You can check out our preorder guide here.
