Matthew Perry‘s October 28 death continues to make headlines as Friends fans mourn the sitcom star’s tragic loss. Matthew died at the end of last month after being found unresponsive in his hot tub.
In 2022, and one year before his death, Matthew offered a rare insight into his true feelings for costar Courtney Cox. These came via his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
Matthew Perry Opened Up About ‘Friends’ Costar Cox
In his candid confession, Perry noted how he felt upon first meeting Courtney, who played eventual on-screen girlfriend and wife, Monica Geller on 1994-2004 sitcom Friends.
“Courteney Cox was wearing a yellow dress and was cripplingly beautiful,” he wrote. In 2015, rumors surfaced that the on-screen couple might be dating, but nothing appeared to materialize.
On-screen, Matthew played funnyman Chandler Bing, best known for his loyalty to friend Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), plus his blossoming relationship with friend-turned-lover Monica. Fans loved seeing the two fool around and then fall in love. Of course, having Joey initiate their marriage was the cherry on the cake.
Courtney Cox Opens Up About Matthew Perry
Courtney, meanwhile, had also spoken of Perry before his passing at the age of 54.
“I loved that Matthew found a way to make his character relatable by showing vulnerability in the personal struggles he was facing,” she stated, adding that his “ability to show very raw emotion” was perhaps why he was so adored.
Perry, who died following a two-hour game of pickleball, still has toxicology reports confirming his cause of death pending. A coroner will produce an official statement based on any results found.
Three days after he died, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc all released a joint statement. In a tribute to Matthew, they said:
“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” they stated. “There is so much to say, but right now, we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”
“In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world,” the former sitcom stars also shared.
