Commenters argue that the government should not set prices, with some even accusing the mayor of communism. Others believe that the decision will only harm nearby stores, implying that residents will go to their local bodegas and corner stores less.
The video above details the press conference in its entirety, including a panel of speakers who asked Mayor Mamdani for additional information about the announcement. He explains that the core set of goods expected to be available in these government-run stores includes “all fresh produce, meat, and seafood, along with 20 other essential items like cheese, milk, and bread.“
Once a month, each of these stores will set a price on this core set of goods and lock it in for the remainder of the month. This will alleviate families from unexpected costs and differing prices, including those with fixed incomes.

In response, Daugherty said, “They are also going to cause major pain to nearby stores.” A few commenters pointed out that local stores will likely just buy the cheaper product for resale. Another person wrote, “Corner stores that sell same stuff will send friends and family to buy it up then they will bring to their stores and mark up. They’ll buy the govt stores out before 5pm daily.
