Neither Melissa Barrera nor Jenna Ortega are going to be working on Scream 7 anymore, but that doesn’t mean they’re done working together. Barrera and Ortega first worked together on Scream 5 (2022) and its sequel, Scream 6 (2023). They were both let go from the franchise a few months ago, but Melissa Barrera has said she “would love” to work with Ortega again. Since they’re both horror fans, the chances of them running into each other on some horror project or another are pretty high if Barrera is to be believed.
Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega Might Run Into Each Other Again
Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega first began working together on Scream 5 in 2022, where they played sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, respectively. They would reprise their roles in the movie’s direct sequel, Scream 6(2023), and their friendship grew naturally as a result. Barrera and Ortega were both meant to star in Scream 7 as well, but Melissa Barrera was let go from the project after she shared pro-Palestinian beliefs on her social media. Not long after that, Jenna Ortega also left Scream 7, reportedly because of failed negotiations. Without its newest leads, the Scream franchise has brought back old-timer Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell).
Even though they aren’t working together anymore, the dynamic duo are still friends. Barrera is holding out hope that they’ll work together again someday, according to a statement she gave ComicBook:
“I would love to work with [Jenna Ortega] again. I do know that she does love horror, so it would probably be in something horror again that we would probably find each other again. She’s incredible, and she’s genuinely a horror fan, so I know she’s constantly looking out for these projects. I think if we were to do something together again, it would definitely be horror.”

At the moment, you can catch Melissa Barrera in Abigail, releasing later this month, and Jenna Ortega in Miller’s Girl. Aside from the Scream movies, some of Barrera’s previous projects include Vida (2018) and In the Heights (2021), while Ortega is, of course, known for her leading role in Netflix’s Wednesday. Scream 7 doesn’t currently have a release date, but stay tuned for more news as production continues.
