New reports have indicated that Michigan’s Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers would prefer to face Abdul El-Sayed rather than Haley Stevens. The remarks have sparked controversy among Democratic Michigan voters, as many have debated which candidate would be the stronger choice.

As reported by CNN, an anonymous source revealed that, while speaking privately with supporters, Rogers claimed that his campaign would be in “good shape” if El-Sayed won the Democratic primary. According to the source, Rogers said, “he’s so radical. I think he’s going to lose big parts of the west part of the state.”

While Stevens promotes more centrist views, El-Sayed is considered by far the more progressive Democratic candidate. This has often sparked discussions over which candidate would be more effective in the general election. Publicly, Rogers has previously refused to say which opponent he would prefer to face.

Michigan Voters Discuss Senate Candidates

On Reddit’s r/Michigan, local voters debated which Democratic candidate would be the stronger choice against the Republican nominee. One of them said: “All R people vote R. Some D people won’t vote if their primary candidate does not make it. This is why they keep winning.”

Others echoed the sentiment: “There’s so much division in the democratic party; young progressives will never vote for Stevens, and there are obviously some who would never vote for Abdul.”

Some people mocked the idea of nominating another moderate, with one user writing: “Let’s try running another centrist candidate that is ideologically aligned closer to republicans! That strategy has only been failing for a decade, but surely this time it will work!”

A few voters even argued that the whole “leak” was part of a strategy: “This conversation was ‘leaked’ because he knows El-Sayed is the stronger statewide candidate. The intention is to get people to think ‘oh, Rogers wants to face El-Sayed, so I should vote Stevens instead’ because they absolutely know Stevens is the electorally weaker candidate. That’s why they’re trying to indirectly boost her.”

Someone else wrote: “They say this stuff because they literally KNOW populist leftwing candidates are a bigger threat to them electorally.”

It remains to be seen which Democratic candidate will win the primary, but the discussion shows that voters remain divided over who would be the stronger challenger against Rogers in the general election.
