It looks like everyone is starting to get hyped up for what seems to be the Borderlands/Fallout successor we’ve been wanting for a while now, The Outer Worlds. No one more so than Head of Xbox Studios Matt Booty who, during an interview with Game Informer, believes it might be the start to a great franchise and even hinted at the possibility of the series being an Xbox exclusive franchise down the line.
Back in 2018, Microsoft acquired Obsidian, the studio behind The Outer Worlds, bringing its studio roster to around 15 other studios who are under the Microsoft flag. Obsidian joined such top industry players like Ninja Theory, Rare, and Double Fine. Booty talked extensively about how Obsidian is working on several projects, and even expressed high hopes for the game’s success and talks about how he believes in the game’s ability to become a franchise.
After being asked if Microsoft is already planning a sequel to The Outer Worlds, Mike Booty stated the following,
I think that’d be that kind of game. From what we’ve seen of the Outer Worlds, my hope is that that’s something we can build and that it really becomes an enduring franchise and it really starts to grow and we can help expand that.
But when pressed if going forward, the series would be a console exclusive, Mike would go on to explain that if they felt it would be good for the franchise they would keep it Xbox exclusive. But if the team felt that keeping the series on all platforms would make more money and be better for the series, then they would go forward with that plan. The Outer Worlds is set to release October 25th and seems to be shaping up to be one of the more exciting releases of the year.
