Xbox’s troubles seemingly aren’t stopping with the recent shutting down of multiple first-party studios, as according to Jeff Grubb on his Giant Bombcast, the Perfect Dark reboot is also falling apart behind the scenes and is far from release. The reboot was announced in 2020 for PC and Xbox Series X|S and is undergoing developmental issues.
The plethora of layoffs and studio closures are barely a few days old, and Xbox fans need to brace for some more bad news now. The Perfect Dark reboot has been in the works for a while and still isn’t anywhere near release, and according to Grubb, it is “in a very rough state.”
The Perfect Dark Reboot Going Through Rocky Development & Is Far From Release
We had already heard about this years ago, and that Crystal Dynamics had joined the development efforts as well. But even after that, it hasn’t resulted in any good news for fans. The Perfect Dark games have always had a first-person perspective, but Xbox might not be happy with that.
Even though Perfect Dark’s reboot was made public back in 2020, it’s still in the early stages of development. If the development didn’t ramp up with Crystal Dynamics’ aid, the future of the game might be in jeopardy.
Crystal Dynamics also went through mass layoffs in 2023 but made sure that the development of Perfect Dark wouldn’t be impacted. But it still puts major doubts on the direction the reboot is headed. Hopefully, the development will find solid footing soon, or the Perfect Dark reboot might just end up getting canned as well.
Microsoft just closed Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios. The entire industry has voiced its disapproval of the extreme measures Xbox has resorted to. After making one of the best games of last year, Tango Gameworks wasn’t able to retain its position. This is probably the reason why Moon Studios, the developers of the Ori series and No Rest For the Wicked, avoided being acquired by any publisher.
