There’s nothing more exciting than moving into a new home. However, for one Missouri woman, it’s felt like a nightmare. According to her, her neighbors across the way have a camera pointed directly at her home. Now, when she’s sitting on her balcony, she’s fearful of the fact that they might be watching her every move.
Em (@emkandy) asks her TikTok audience, “What can we legally do to get this camera off of us?” Em says she spoke to police about a problem she’s having with her new neighbors at her apartment complex. The neighbors have a camera attached to their home and it’s pointed directly at Em’s balcony. Police told her since this isn’t “part of their jurisdiction,” they can’t assist her.
Em says she and her roommate are “really uncomfortable” with the camera pointing onto their property. One of Em’s favorite features of her property is her huge balcony, which she thought she’d get to enjoy in peace. Em points to the building across from her and the camera, which you can see in plain sight. She explains, “The first floor tenants” put the camera up after Em and her roommate moved in and it’s been pointing at them ever since. Em thought it was weird because it’s not pointed anywhere at their own property or “at the back door where someone might break in.”
As Em explains, the camera doesn’t appear to be on her neighbor’s house for “safety” reasons. Instead, she said, “It more so feels like it’s pointed right at us for recording us because we’re two cute young girls.” When she and her roommate went to confront them about the camera, she said nobody answered. The next day, they went to the leasing office to ask them about it. The leasing office said that the people who lived in Em’s apartment before them had the same issue with these neighbors. The family that lived in Em’s apartment had children and everything, so she said this is “super weird” to her. Then, of course, cops told Em that they couldn’t help them or “get involved.”
After that, the neighbor with the camera knocked on Em’s front door and started yelling at them. He told them that they shouldn’t have been on his property. Now, he says his girlfriend thinks he’s doing something suspicious because these women came onto their property. Em and her roommate proceeded to ask the girlfriend about the camera and why it needs to be there. The girlfriend allegedly asked, “Why would it be a problem with having a camera pointed at you unless you’re doing something illegal?”
The entire situation is weird and off-putting to Em and her roommate. She said that there’s nothing she can do about the situation and asked her TikTok what she’s able to do. As far as she’s concerned, she said, “We just want the camera angled away.” They don’t want to have to cover their balcony and the beautiful view they pay for.
Em’s video immediately sparked reactions from concerned commenters who came to share their opinions. One commenter tried to give Em some solid advice: “So the police are incorrect. This is invasion of privacy and illegal filming. You have a legal right to safe and private use of your home. You can and should file an order of protection against them for stalking. And the leasing office should fix this right away.”
Others thought the entire situation is just downright strange. One commented, “His gf knows he is a creep.” Another suggested, “I would make daily big signs that all the neighbors can see. Like, ‘Anyone know why the pervs have their camera pointed right at us?’ Come up with a new sign every day.” Commenters continue to share their thoughts on how they would handle the situation.
