The Guiding Lands is the post-game content you will unlock in the later parts of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. A microcosm of all the game’s maps, this hunting ground lets you freely hunt monsters without a cart and time limit to obtain special materials. For example, you’ll need to collect the Guiding Lands-exclusive Tempered Trancehide and Charged Deathly Shocker materials to get the Rarity 12 Health Augment. Unlocking most Layered Armor and Weapons options is done using this place’s materials too. For that reason, the community lovingly calls this place, “The Grinding Lands.” Before you jump in and start the grind, let’s learn everything you need to know about MHW Iceborne‘s Guiding Lands.
How to Unlock Guiding Lands in MHW Iceborne
The Guiding Lands is unlocked after you’ve completed MHW Iceborne‘s last story quest, “MR★6 Paean of Guidance.” Once you’re done with the quest, speak with people in Seliana and you’ll be tasked to hunt a Zinogre in the Guiding Lands. When the Expedition is complete, you can now access the Guiding Lands and its first 4 hunting Regions: Forest, Wasteland, Rotted, and Coral.
Unlocking the Guiding Lands’s Volcano and Tundra Regions can be done by finishing these MHW Special Assignment quest chains. Speak with The Admiral in Seliana when he has a purple exclamation mark above his head to unlock them:
- “MR★6 Sterling Pride”
- “MR★6 Reveal Thyself, Destroyer”
- “MR★6 Across the Lost Path”
Can You Max Out All Guiding Lands’ Region Levels? Answered
Each Region of the Guiding Lands has its own Levels; the higher the Levels, the tougher the monster will appear. When you first open the Guiding Lands the maximum Level of all Regions is Level 4. Unlocking your MR caps and finishing these Assigned Quests will also unlock each tier of Guiding Lands Levels:
- “(★6) Sleep Now in the Fire”: Unlocks MR49 level cap and Guiding Lands Region Level 5.
- “(★6) Big Burly Bash”: Unlocks MR69 level cap and Guiding Lands Region Level 6.
- “(★6) To the Very Ends With You”: Unlocks MR99 level cap and Guiding Lands Region Level 7.
Region Levels will fluctuate every time you hunt a monster that lives in a different habitat. Make sure you pick the “Fix Region Levels” in the Quest Counter so the experience bars stay put. The “Adjust Region Levels” option will only let you decrease a Region Level to rebalance them out.
The best way to raise a Region Level is by breaking a monster’s part, cutting its tail, and trapping it. You’ll also gain bonus Region Level by defeating monsters that are native to that Region. Grabbing monsters’ tracks can raise the Level of their corresponding habitat as well.
Anything that adds Research Points should help you fill-up the Region Level’s bars, as seen in GaijinHunter’s video above. Your Region Levels can be checked from The Guiding Lands menu in Hunter’s Notes or when selecting The Guiding Lands option in the Quest Counter.
The default total Region Levels that you can spread out in the Guiding Lands is 27 Levels (7, 7, 7, 4, 1, 1). Nevertheless, Japanese player @igaguri8810 was able to max out all Region Levels to Level 7 on the PlayStation 4. This was done by killing around 5,600 Tempered Elder Dragons or Tier 3 monsters in your own Guiding Lands. Unfortunately, playing in other players’ Guiding Lands won’t count so you have to be the host if you really want to grind.
Guiding Lands Monsters and Gathering Nodes Material List in MHW Iceborne
As mentioned above, hunting and gathering nodes in MHW Iceborne‘s Guiding Lands will yield special materials. Both the normal and Tempered variants of each monster and Elder Dragon will drop different materials too. You’ll need all of them to fully Augment your weapons and unlock every Layered Armor and Weapons option.
You can obtain Monster Lures to lure out certain monsters through two methods. First, gather Special Tracks that randomly appear in the Guiding Lands or hunt and break monsters’ parts to get random Lures. Second, select the “Guiding Alchemy” option in the Elder Melder to craft Lures. However, like Melding monsters’ materials, you can only make Lures of monsters that you’ve fought beforehand.
Meanwhile, bonepiles and mining nodes in MHW Guiding Lands have their own levels independent of the Region Level. The nodes’ Levels can only be raised by gathering them as often as you can, with nodes respawning every 200 seconds. Once the nodes are at max Level, the Giant Bonepile or Mining node will spawn, which rewards you with the rarest node material. Mining the crystal nodes can give you Coals or Ores for Steamworks fuel as well.
The gathering nodes have several fixed spawn points in each area, but they’ll take random locations from the fixed spots every time they respawn.
